Quidditch Prompt: Hogwarts is Home
@hogwartsonline ||| Hogwarts is Home
Hogwarts wasn’t James’ home. His home was in the East of London where he had a large bedroom over-looking his back garden, a large green oval that was set up as a miniature Quidditch pitch. It was where he had posters of at least seven different famous seekers flying across his room, holding a game-winning snitch high in the air, and a couple of the Witch Weekly best smile winners smiling coyly down at him.
It’s not to say he hated Hogwarts. He found the schoolwork easy enough, and there was something very fun about coming some of the more interesting books for different kinds of spells that weren’t taught. He made it a second home for himself, surrounding himself with enough non-blood family members and achievements that he began to receive the same kind of ego bolstering that he got back home from his doting parents.
He never saw it as arrogance, it was just how he was raised, as the miracle child of a woman who always wanted to be a mother. And it was until he met a certain redhead that was as fiery as she was humble that he even began to idolise different kinds of traits.
James spoke constantly about home, to anyone who’d listen, when asked what he was doing for the holidays always made Sirius scowl a little, trying to hold back something like jealousy. And when he turned up on their doorstep, covered in bruises, cradling his arm painfully, praying more than anything that his family wouldn’t turn up behind him and drag him back, he was worried he wasn’t good enough for a place like this, a home like this.
But for James’ parents, who always wanted children, having a second child to take in felt like a godsend. And when he wakes to his first Christmas morning away from home there was a smell of freshly baked mince pies and the huge Christmas tree standing next to their fireplace, a stack of presents sitting underneath it. James never admitted it, but he couldn’t help but feel jealous at first, his mum feeding him soup as his injuries healed, making sure that everything James got Sirius got as well. He’d never had to share home before, share the limelight.
But when he returned to Hogwarts Lily was the first to notice that something was different. The way he moved to accommodate others, allow for the first years to have a play with his snitch, watching them grin happily. Lily couldn’t help but watch him tucking in people who fell asleep on the couch and was one of the only people to notice him slyly placing protection charms on anyone about to get targeted in a more deadly prank.
When Lily kissed him for the first time down by the black lake his head spun, and his heart raced and all he could think about was taking her home to meet his parents. To show her off to his mum and have her beat his dad at Quidditch chess. For the first time, he thought about another home he could have, with her.
When he graduated, side by side with his three best friends and girlfriend by his side, he didn’t cry. He didn’t care about leaving the place he’d spent 7 years so long as he was with the same people. More than anything he was excited to bring Lily home for the summer, where she was going to get to know his parents, and where James had planned to propose on the second week of summer under the large oak tree in his back garden where he had spent many a day sitting in his childhood.
It wasn’t until he saw his parents lying on a bed in St Mungo’s, covered in pink spots, their skin a pale, sickly green colour as he watched them fade away peacefully under the spell of the healers to take away their pain. He felt his mothers hand loosen and drop away from his and he felt, for the first time, that his the home had slipped away from him as well.
The house felt empty now, without his mum cooking a pot roast in the kitchen and his dad experimenting with potions in the garage, their laughter filling up the living room as they put on the Beatles and waltzed terribly, and James groaning at them.
He had always been the anomaly in their group, the one with the happy childhood, happy parents, happy life. Sirius had forgotten his old family long ago, Lily feeling like she was intruding on Petunia’s only haven away from her, Remus stuck in the shackles of his own self-hate, and Peter trying to find a new family at every turn.
He always thought Hogwarts was just a boarding school, a place where he found his people and trained up to protect his family and his home. But a few weeks later, James watched as Remus and Sirius attempted to swing dance to the latest Queen album next to Lily, who was grinning and extremely pregnant with James’ child and Peter eating the last of James’ attempt at a pasta dinner. It might have taken him a few years to figure it out, but there was no doubt in his mind that he’d been wrong to ever dismiss Hogwarts as anything more than just a school.
