Amid the explosion of edited collections of articles devoted to Herodotus that has taken place since the early 2000s comes Munson’s two-volume collection—the biggest one yet. At twenty-nine articles, this collection surpasses Brill’s Companion to Herodotus, which was previously the largest.1 What distinguishes Munson’s collection from the others is that it consists of only previously-published pieces, which is characteristic of the Oxford Readings in Classical Studies series in which her volumes appear. Munson has done an outstanding job at selecting some of the best articles written by the top Herodotean scholars working in the last several decades. Her collection will prove useful to scholars in the field, but it will especially appeal to graduate students and ad-vanced undergraduates, for whom it should become a standard, first-stop introduction to the study of Herodotus."

Going through the motions of taking care of responsibilities and obligations isn’t always something we’re likely to opt to do. We do this awesome thing called “procrastinating”. One of the most overused and overrated excuses there is nowadays. But the more we take care of, the less stress we’ll have.

It’s that simple.

Knock tasks out that you HAVE to take care of and you’ll free up so much more leeway for the things you want to do. Relax, nap, have a few drinks, play video games, binge watch Malcolm In the Middle on Netflix, go to a concert you’ve been not wanting to miss again, reading that book you’ve been putting off. All without impending anxiety growing in the pit of your stomach.

It is possible, just take care of the things you HAVE to take care of or get done.

Put up with that coworker that works your last nerve, bust out that last page of work, clean one more room, put in that extra time, make that appointment, take the time to clean up after yourself, put on that face to get through the things you need to do and you’ll find how much better you feel after and how much energy you actually get from it.

People get in situations where they’re trapped by sentiments.

Being afraid to sell something that’s been with you for so long through so much (selling a camera is tough 😢) or not wanting to have someone you care about think differently of you is hard. But you have to do things for the better of you sometimes. It’s not a selfish thing if it’s necessary. 

Keeping socks with holes in them is pointless; either sew them or get new ones. But which action would benefit you more? Would sewing them cause you discomfort? Say it does, and you still have to get new socks. You wasted time trying to save something that was still useless in the end.

As human beings, we’re psychologically evolved to form attachments. To people, to things, to places. And we forget how to keep moving forward and keep life simple. 

As Confucius once said, “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”

If there’s a problem, what’s wrong? What’s causing this disturbance? Identify it, and make the steps to fix it. Make it better. There’s no real reason for things to not be okay. There will always be problems, because things outside of and bigger than just yourself will occur and there’s not a whole lot you can do to influence such dilemmas. But it doesn’t mean that there has to be a bunch of unnecessary, toxic issues to make YOU not okay. 

You always have the power to make things better, change the aperture and set the ISO on your life, and make it brighter. 📸

As visionaries and innovators, we are driven perfectionists. Everything has to be executed just so. We can push ourselves to spend hours sitting in front of a screen until our eyes melt, push our bodies to take another step, to walk a mile further, to endure the elements to get what we need. We tend to ignore people who interrupt us, who derail our long sought for train of thought. We forget to eat. We forget to do dishes. We forget to shower. We tie ourselves in knots, trying to get everything done and keep doing more.

But we deserve to rest too. Recharge our batteries, spend time with people we can let loose with. To actually get a real night’s sleep and not a meth addict’s nap. We forget that. We forget to be human sometimes. Doesn’t make us bad, angry people. It just makes us workaholics. We are addicted to our work, it keeps us going. Whatever fire for life we have from starting it, is fueled by working and adding and accomplishing things on the To-Do list.
