Reposted from @sarahannelawless - A mandrake root crucifix that once belonged to Emperor Rudolf II and was plundered from his castle in Prague in 1648. He had painted images of mandrakes in his collection as well. For the time period it was not unusual for mandrake roots to be formed into Jesus on the cross or Mary with Baby Jesus. It demonstrates how interwoven Catholicism became with local folk beliefs based in animism over time. Such talismanic fetiches were/are believed to grant the possessor protection from violence, illness, evil spirits, bad luck, and curses as well as grant them supernatural powers. They were meant to be kept secret or it was believed the power wouldn’t work or alternately you would be accused of witchcraft and hanged. I went to a local historical artifacts store in the Old Walled City #intramuros! The place is called Silahis Center and it's so.... I can't describe it fully except WOW. Anyways, they had this dog skull from one of our local tribes, complete with a crown of rat skulls.
