in my mind,

as i was listening to

a 'young lion' trumpeter play,

i wanted him to 'just blow it'

play a pure dulcet tone,

like my jazz heroes...

*

however,

he was slurring

muting & otherwise obscuring

the clear expression of his notes

to my dismay

*

until i realized

that maybe he was playing HIS story

*

& maybe HIS story

wasn't as pure, clear,

or pretty - as my ears would wish it;

*

being of African descent,

tho American born,

mayhaps i shoulda realized

the Motherland being the world's

precious metal & gem resource,          

ravaged & exploited by all manner of men,

& countries from all 'corners' of the globe;

*

an artist whose very DNA

is derived from that soil,

the crust of such

& roots

*

can't help but reflect, select & be affected by

the effects

of such...neglect & disrespect;

*

and his tone,  

however fuzzed & moaned

was HIS truth

& HIS own.
