Etymology: Hippopotamus + Power or Powder (like sand) or Pow (onomatopoeia for a powerful hit) + Don (Spanish for “lord”) or -don (common dinosaur suffix, derived from ancient Greek word for “tooth”)

Design Origins:
Hippowdon is visually based on a hippopotamus and behaviourally based on the opposite of a hippopotamus, being active during the day rather than the night and enjoying dry sandy areas instead of wetlands. Given the pours on its back that constantly spit sand, it may also be conceptually based on Bahamut, a mythical being said to have the head of a hippo and support a bed of sand.

As it usually goes the male is the one being used as the face of its species.I think the only one who really goes against that is Indeedee which I kind of wish it was the opposite way so the highlighting would be Male Indeedee and Female Meowstic.
I live near a desert area, and I sometimes see Hippowdon (from a distance, obviously.) And... they spit out sand from their body. My best friend insists they eat rocks to chew them up and spit out sand. I looked on Bulbapedia and it just says they eat sand... sadly we don't have any Pokémon Professors in our small town to ask, so: who's right? Where's the sand coming from?
the sand thing is half true! they do "eat" sand, but not as food. instead, they filter plant matter and desert grass types out of the sand. the sand they swallow then gets filtered through a specialized sand organ, which stores it for the hippowdon to blast out later as needed. the sand does help them break down their food before it gets filtered, since they don't really chew, but they filter it out through their sand ports. some sand may end up passing through their entire digestive tract, but it should generally be a small amount!
