Thorong La Pass How to Cross
At 5,416 meters tall, Thorong La Pass marks the peak of the Annapurna Circuit trek - a spot known across mountaineering circles worldwide. Though tough, stepping onto that high ground often feels like the true reward after days of walking uphill. Because altitude plays such a strong role here, taking time to adjust matters more than speed or strength. Instead of rushing forward, those who listen to their bodies usually find clearer paths through thin air. Near the top, rows of fluttering prayer flags wave slowly in icy winds, welcoming each arrival without words. While every step before leads somewhere, this moment - standing still among fabric whispers - sticks longest in memory. Few experiences on the trail match what happens when breath fogs above 5,000 meters with silence below.
Thorong La Pass Explained
High above tree line, Thorong La Pass links Manang to Mustang, forming a key stretch of the Annapurna Circuit route. Around it, towering white summits rise into clear air, backed by rugged slopes and vast open skies. Though the path itself isn’t steep or complex, thinning oxygen at elevation tests endurance over days on foot. Fewer breaths come easily once past 5,000 meters, where every step forward takes effort.
Getting Ready for the Test
Long before stepping near Thorong La, preparation kicks in. Moving up slowly matters - spending days adjusting in spots like Manang helps the body cope. Water intake stays critical, just as much as eating well and sleeping enough. Pushing too fast? That trips many people up when they reach the pass. Success climbs sharply when the plan allows steady progress, nothing rushed.
The Night Before the Crossing
Night falls on Thorong Phedi or High Camp for most walkers heading toward the pass. What comes next stirs both eagerness and quiet worry - usually the toughest stretch ahead. Gear gets sorted, skies watched closely, rest taken where possible. Cold bites hard after dark, worse when trails fill up each season.
Early Morning Start
Darkness still hangs heavy when boots hit the path. Before light spreads fully across the sky, people are already moving. Starting early keeps them ahead of the wind that builds strength later. Weather shifts fast up here, so timing matters more than speed. Beams from headlamps cut narrow paths on uneven ground. Each step upward demands patience, not force. A slow rhythm saves breath, lets muscles adjust. Height pulls harder the farther they go - steady wins every time.
Struggles On The Way Up
At high altitudes, breathing feels harder right away. With less oxygen around, basic actions take extra work compared to sea level. People on foot usually get worn out faster, sometimes stopping many times along the way. Chilly weather shows up without warning, wind pushes hard, and parts of the path climb sharply upward. Staying focused in mind matters just as much as being strong in body.
Reaching the Summit
High above the trail, the peak of Thorong La Pass comes into view after long hours on foot. Flags in bright hues snap in the wind, staking claim to the roof of the trek. A pause unfolds - cameras click, breath steadies, pride settles. This spot, reached only after many steps, holds more than altitude; it holds purpose. The air feels thin, yet full, carrying weight without words.
Descent to Muktinath
Downhill from the peak now, the path leads to Muktinath. Hardest climbs behind, yet steps ahead stretch far, tough on legs. With every mile, land sheds green, turns bare, wide. Arriving here feels different - dustier air, thinner sky, a quiet win settling in. This place marks entry into another world along the Annapurna route.
Safety at Crossings
Start careful each step over Thorong La Pass with safety first. Move at a slow pace while drinking water often, wear layers that trap heat, yet watch closely for headaches or dizziness from thin air. Sudden wind or snow might appear without warning - being ready to adjust plans keeps risk low. When breathing becomes hard or confusion sets in, going down saves lives even if progress feels lost.
Conclusion
High up, Thorong La Pass marks the toughest part of the Annapurna Circuit Trek - also among Nepal's most vivid moments. Because of thin air, sweeping views, and what it means to finish, many travelers remember it longest. When bodies adjust well to elevation, moving across feels earned, even if quiet or tiring at times. Few mountain crossings stay so clearly in someone’s mind afterward.

Yakushima usually isn’t on the itinerary for first-time visitors to Japan. About as far as it gets from the country's tourist-congested golden triangle (that would be Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka), the small island doesn’t offer the cherry blossoms, temples, or cityscapes visitors to Japan have come to expect. But as I float in crystal blue waters just off Isso Beach, an idyllic swimming spot that I have practically to myself on a perfect autumn day, all I can think is—“Well, their loss.”
