Definition: A person who lacks romantic attraction to other people.

People on the aromantic spectrum are referred to as “aro-spec”.

Some common misconceptions:

“Aromantic people can’t feel love?! That’s so sad!”

Eh, nope. Aromantic people can certainly experience love. Just not the romantic kind. They still care for their friends and family just as everyone else. Aromantic people just don’t experience love in romantic ways. Some aros won’t experience any sort of love/attraction at all, and this is completely fine, too. Not experiencing any/all types of love/attraction certainly doesn’t make anyone a bad person. :)

“Aromantic people are like emotionless robots.”

Definitely not. Again, they simply don’t feel romantic attraction.

“All aromantic people are asexual.”

Not true at all. Many aro people experience sexual attraction to others. This doesn’t automatically make them “players” or “shallow”. One can respect a sexual partner without being in love with them. These people are referred to as allosexual aromantic or ‘alloaro’/‘aroallo’. However, many alloaro people are demonized for experiencing sexual attraction without romantic attraction, which is really sad. :( There are so many good, kind alloaro people.

Aromantic people’s attitude towards towards romantic actions is described as romance-favorable, romance-indifferent, or romance-repulsed. Aromantic people’s attitude towards the idea of others having romantic relationships is described as romance-positive, romance-neutral, or romance-negative.

Definition: A person who has two different genders. Their gender may switch from one to the other, fluctuate in between the two, or be simultaneous.

I think people may automatically assume the two genders are male and female, but that’s definitely not always the case. Bigender can be of any two genders, for example, neutrois and demigirl or boyflux and a xenogender.

You may have seen a different bigender flag with a pink, blue, and purple theme. However, this flag was retired because the creator of that flag (from what I’ve heard) was a rather problematic member of the community.

Definition: A person whose gender changes overtime. At times they could feel male, at others feel nonbinary, trigender, neutrois, or any other gender. Some genderfluid people are fluid through a certain set of genders, while others may be fluid through any genders.

Genderfluid people’s gender can change at random, on a certain ‘schedule’, or change according to different circumstances. Their gender can change by the hour, day, week, month, or even year.

The term ‘genderfluid’ can be somewhat of an umbrella label, referring to any gender that changes overtime.

Overarching Definition: A person who usually experiences lesbian-type attraction, but very occasionally experiences a different type of attraction.

Since the direction of attraction varies from person to person, I made some more specific flags than just the typical homoflexible flag which has the rainbow flag with a stripe of the “straight flag” (a six stripe black-to-white gradient) down the middle.

Specific Definition: A lesbian who very occasionally experiences attraction to men.

Specific Definition: A lesbian who very occasionally experiences attraction to nonbinary people.

Specific Definition: A lesbian who very occasionally experiences attraction to two or more genders.

Specific Definition: A lesbian who very occasionally experiences attraction to multiple but not all genders.

Specific Definition: A lesbian who very occasionally experiences non-genderblind attraction to all/any genders.

Specific Definition: A lesbian who very occasionally experiences [often genderblind] attraction to all/any genders.

These identities all fall under the multisexual-spectrum (m-spec).

★ Whew! This takes a lot more effort than it looks, btw. Especially for someone who’s perpetually tired, no matter their sleeping schedule.

—Aka ‘the libramasc flag’

Definition: person who is almost agender (lacking a gender), but has a small tie to masculinity/maleness.

This is sometimes considered a subset of demiboy, but is more specific, as the rest of the gender is implied to be agender.

Definition: A person who feels partially but not fully a girl/woman/female.

The rest of a demigirl’s gender is most often thought to be agender, but that isn’t true for everyone.

Definition: A person who lacks sexual attraction to other people.

Asexuality is sometimes confused with celibacy. The difference is that celibates feel sexual attraction, they just don’t allow themselves to act on it. Asexuals, however, don’t feel any sexual attraction in the first place.

Some common misconceptions:

“Asexuals hate sex.”

Not true. While some asexuals do hate sex, others may love it! They simply don’t feel sexually attracted to whomever they may have sex with. Asexuals may also choose to masturbate - masturbation has nothing to do with sexual attraction to others.

“All asexuals are aromantic (don’t experience romantic attraction).”

While some asexuals are aromantic, not all of them are. Asexuals may date, fall in love, get married, etc. These things are not off limits to asexuals at all, and many enjoy doing so. Romance and sex are two separate things. If sex without love can exist, so can love without sex. :)

Definition: A person who is attracted to all genders, often regardless of that person’s gender identity.

I sometimes hear people describe pansexual folks as being attracted to everyone. Then it gets taken a little too literally, and the other person ends up thinking they’re truly attracted to, well… everyone. No, pan folks aren’t attracted to literally every single person they’ve ever seen. What they do have is the possibility to be attracted to any person of any gender.
