One of the 3rd grade science standards is: Students will understand that a variety of weather hazards result from natural processes; humans cannot eliminate weather-related hazards but can reduce their impacts.
We have expanded that into a "natural disasters" unit. (Once I got my class to stop naming each other 'natural disasters') we have been watching episodes of NOVA... because honestly trying to explain what a hurricane is like to Colorado kids is like trying to describe the moon to a mole... anyway in the Hurricane episode they had footage of Super Storm Sandy and the fire that was in Rockaway Beach. Their question was, "How can things be on fire if there's so much water?" I explained about gas lines.
Today during the Earthquakes episode they showed fires in the aftermath and like five of my kids said, "Oh no! The gas lines are broken!"
Then when I paused the video they had a whole conversation about early warning systems and how they work. They were using phrases like "lead times" and "emergency management". I think we can check that standard as proficient!
