What if: along with the powers, the dragon rides become more dragon like, each time they get a new power. Now I have two versions of this au

Version A: they start gaining their powers and dragon traits before they enter the school

They get their initial powers as a result of the corruption. I have seen a lot of corruption aus surrounding individual members but I raise you an au where every student who is part of the school is corrupted. They all got corrupted in one way or another before entering the school and since they are magic users/dragon riders it affected them differently. At first it seemed like a sickness then it grew. The corruption forced their bodies to grow dragon like features, such as horns, claws, wings, and tails. Then it forced their magic out of them not as a trickle like it was supposed to be but as a raging burst all at once. Devastation reigned and the last of the dragons were called in from their self imposed isolation to prevent the rider from accidentally destroying the world. They forced all of the students into the academy which was equal parts school and prison. Some despise being contained against their will and tried to escape. Others figured out that the more control they get over their powers the more they turned into dragons and try to resist learning in order to keep their humanity. In the end though they are left with the choice of either excepting the powers and becoming dragons or fighting back and risk further the corruption plans of devastation.

And

Version B: they start gaining their powers and dragon traits after they enter the school

In this version each time they get a new power they become more dragon-like. They gain these new features due to the school’s interference (not that they know that at first). When they find out the school justifies it saying that their dragon forms will keep them safe from the corruption. However in reality the real reason is due to steady extinction of the dragon species. So since all of the former dragon were already dying of corruption poisoning they picked out riders who they wanted to replace them and raise their hatchings in their place, before staging their deaths as one final battle as to not raise the rider’s suspicions.

If either of these ideas are of interest to anyone then I will try to expand them into a full au. But for now I will leave a poll.
