For Kant, the most basic functional dualism is observer and observed...
... but it is epistemic (study of human knowledge) , not ontological (study of being, reality, existence) . That distinction matters, and most people blur it.
Kant is not saying there are two kinds of things in reality. He is saying there are two roles within cognition that cannot be collapsed without destroying the possibility of experience itself. What Kant starts from is not a world split in two, but a constraint. Experience only occurs if there is something that is given and something that unifies what is given. Sensibility supplies appearances. Understanding supplies form. Without receptivity, nothing appears. Without synthesis, nothing is experienced as anything.
This creates a split between the observer and the observed, but only when we think about knowledge. The observer isn't a physical thing. It's more like a function, a way to bring things together. Kant refers to this as the 'transcendental unity of apperception,' which might sound complicated, but it's really not. It's just a rule that says all our thoughts need to connect to one main idea; if they don't, then they aren't really ours and we can't call them experiences. On the other hand, the observed isn't the actual object itself. It's how things look, shaped by space, time, and our understanding. So, the real difference isn't 'mind against the world,' but rather the action we take versus what is given to us in our experiences.
The critical move is that dualism is unavoidable, but it tells you nothing about reality as it is in itself. It only tells you about the conditions under which experience is possible for creatures like us. Kant blocks the metaphysical (study of how reality is) slide. Descartes crosses it. Post-Kantians keep tripping over it.
Nietzsche’s critique bites exactly here. He accepts Kant’s diagnosis of the structure, but rejects the reification. Once you forget that “observer” is a function and start treating it as a thing, you have already committed the grammatical error. Metzinger later radicalizes this saying that the observer is a model with no owner. Observer/observed is the most basic dualism at the level of cognition. But it is not a statement about how the world is. It is a statement about how experience is assembled.
The observer is not a thing facing the world, but a rule that makes “facing” possible at all.
