Hacienda de Actopán, Kati Horna, c. 1950
My dad liked the Supergirl movie. As in, when I asked him a couple of times what he thought, he said he really enjoyed it and that it was action packed, which is what he usually says of most action movies we've seen together. We even talked about a couple of plot points pretty positively. Supergirl came up in a conversation again, because my mom made a comment about how Clark is an actual nerd and kind of lame. I got offended by that, because she meant it condescendingly, and I relate deeply to that character. I took it quite personally. My dad started talking about how Clark is basically an upstanding guy and for literally no reason, said, "Kara is a complete ditz in the movie. She's a real bimbo. She drinks and parties and acts like an idiot." I had to stop myself from saying anything because I could feel anger boiling in the pit of my stomach. I thought I was mad about the comment regarding Clark... that paled in comparison to what I felt when he said that about Kara.
Be forewarned that there will be spoilers for Supergirl and Hidalgo! It'll make sense why I'm talking about Hidalgo, but if you haven't seen it and don't want to get spoiled on it... I'm not saying to go watch it, but I will be spoiling it. Also, Hidalgo is not a historical movie. It claims it's based on real events, but it's not. Frank Hopkins was widely known as a fabricator, so there's a lot of doubt surrounding claims he made during his life. That's important due to a plot point involving a deeply tragic moment in history I'll be talking about in this post. The plot points I discuss are fictional in a real historical event.
