H. G. Wells wrote hard, materialist science fiction. His Time Machine novel treats time as a system—mechanical, indifferent, and governed by cause and effect. History unfolds through pressure, entropy, and accident, not moral correction.

Then in 2002 The Time Machine arrives with Hollywood “improvements,” and the worldview flips. Time is no longer a dimension but a supernatural force with rules and preferences. Change the details and fate simply swaps mechanisms: kill the mugger and a carriage takes his place. Emma must die because the universe has decided she is required for the protagonist’s growth.
