finally got around to doing fanart for one of my favorite comic artists of all time! it’s Shen as a God Tier(Maid of Heart) with SmolGhostsprite! (i say finally, because i’ve been planning on doing this since 2015) In case anyone can’t read my handwriting, the note says:

Shen, thank you for Creating these amazing comics, they always put a Smile on my face & have gotten me though some rough days. you always make me Happy with your art, and i hope you are also having a good day ^u^

Over my spring break, I did a few productive things, like job hunting, developing creative projects, and binging on @owlturdcomix‘s Blue Chair series on Webtoons. I had seen his work around before, primarily on Facebook, mostly #Relatable content. I had also read his recent series, Live With Yourself, and was curious as to what his earlier projects were like. I enjoy the bright, playful colors and strong expressions in his comics - two things I need to work on myself, and his sense of humor is right up my alley. I was not disappointed in the slightest when I read from his 2013 comics right up to his most recent update. One thing I love about looking through the creative histories of other artists is getting to see their style grow and develop over time. Honestly, it’s incredibly inspiring for me, seeing how people can put out work for years and years, regardless of how much attention they may or may not be getting. Even if their efforts don’t pay off in the sense of them becoming mainstream, it definitely pays off in their skills growing tremendously over time. 

However, the most recent update on Blue Chair had me feeling a little concerned. I also read the update on Shen’s website (http://owlturd.com/writing) explaining how he felt about catering to a wider audience and the limitations of the content that a well established artist can feel when they’re trying not to unintentionally ostracize their viewers by making content that is #UNRelatable. Obviously, I have no idea how that feels; I think my biggest following is my pathfinder group composed of about 8 people, and it’s pretty easy to cater to people you know well. And play pathfinder with.

I guess the point of me spending hours on that picture right up there as well as this message was just to send a shout out to Shen. I don’t know how it feels to have an audience that large, and I can imagine it’s daunting. But I love your comics, from 2013 to now. Your style is simple, but exceptionally expressive, and I have enjoyed reading through them for the past three days. I’m actually graduating from college this coming spring with a degree in Fine Arts, and I like learning from other artists as much as I can, so I appreciate the times you would briefly describe your coloring or layering techniques (yeah, the coloring thing was two frames, but it was a good reference to understand the palettes you choose when conveying specific emotions - which is what I referenced for the picture above). It is also uplifting to know you were able to create this much and become a pretty well-known presence on the Internet through persistence and a continuous drive to move forward.
