the stage list for brawl is better (especially with the unity ruleset)

the pace of the game is very slow with only moments of extreme speed and rapid decision-making, makes it feel almost like chess

when the pace is slow and combos barely exist, you have to make every single hit count for even more and lock your opponent out of options more effectively. the game engine is literally built to disallow most combos but from that, there is the emergent gameplay of trapping people such that their options don’t matter creates effective combos while also requiring more knowledge of the game in general

the movement feels far more fluid and deliberate than smash 4 while being much less wild and demanding than melee

best airdodge mechanics overall in the series. landing with an airdodge has normal landing lag, which is very powerful when combined with how good shields are*, but airdodging in the air was VERY punishable and made edgeguarding actually worth a shit unlike smash 4 where you can spam it

ledge hogging is a good mechanic that should have stayed around. i am glad smash 4 took away effectively infinite ledge invincibility though

you can tell when someone is good at brawl. low to mid level melee/PM players get by just on sitting in their basement grinding tech skill for years without ever hearing the word neutral, and smash 4 players pick bayo or cloud or mario and just slam their face into the controller for wins. even in brawl with busted ass meta knight and busted ass ice climbers (which should be banned, we’re still discussing it as a community unfortunately), you’ll get destroyed by someone that knows what they’re doing

*it’s fair to say this is too powerful, in which case i would accept smash 4′s landing lag for airdodging into the ground to weaken some defensive utility

i like when i can tell i lost a game because i suck at the game. most games don’t actually give me that feeling, that i could improve things and that i’m not fighting the game as well as the player. brawl is one of about 3 games that doesn’t make me feel like shit for playing and losing and learning.

yeah that is still an unpleasant memory for me as well, driving has been less fun in the years since that unfortunate happening yikes
