We talk a lot on the blog about ways to keep your phone data safe from hackers and phishing scams by being careful online and using a VPN. But there’s a much more direct way criminals can get their hands on your phone: by picking your pocket.

Unfortunately, this is an extremely common problem. Phone theft happens to millions of Americans each year, and although the numbers are dropping after the introduction of mobile kill switches, it’s still a problem we all need to be aware of.

Phandroid released a great list of the techniques pickpockets will use to steal your phone to help us be on the lookout for potential danger. The tricks might be as complex as one thief causing a diversion while their accomplice sneaks your phone out of your pocket or purse, or as simple as asking to borrow your phone to make a call and then running away. 

The most important takeaways: Always be aware of your surroundings, particularly in a crowd. Do what you can to make yourself less of a target by not making your phone overly accessible and not looking lost or vulnerable.

If the worst comes to worst and your phone does get stolen, you can track and remotely lock your Android using Android Device Manager or Find my iPhone for an iOS device, provided you’ve already set them up on your phone (if you haven’t, go do that now).
