"It’s a small thank you, for everything. Admittedly I did not think it through. Apologies."
"Oh, I see. I must say... it's such a lovely gesture. You just took me by surprise is all."

Kissed
18. Back of hand
Right. Well, this is new. Shiro didn’t expect for her hand to have suddenly be taken and kissed, and by Hermann no less. She blinked in surprised, feeling her cheeks heat up a little.
"Ah- Um… m-may I ask why the, uh, sudden hand kiss…?" Shiro nervously brushed a strand of hair away from her face with her free hand.
Yeah, she’s been effectively taken by surprise.
Game
Game:I’ll write our characters playing a game.
"I haven’t played chess in so long." Shiro muttered, pondering over the chess pieces placed organized on the board until moved, which a few were.
"Nether have I. There’s been more work to do lately." Hermann replied, moving a piece forward.
It had been a while since ether of them could relax like this. Shiro had asked earlier if he had a chess set around, offering that they could take a break and just play a little game like that. She wouldn’t keep him for too long though, so if he just wanted to play one game that was fine.
"I can’t exactly say I’ve had any sort of research to do, like you do. I’m not a scientist." She paused to sigh. "Or, I mean I might have bee if it wasn’t for the war."
"You might be able to still."
"Maybe." Shiro mused and pondered the pieces again. She hummed in thought, tracking the possibilities.
"Puzzled?" Hermann asked with a slight smile.
"No, just thinking."
They both hardly spoke throughout the game, silently strategizing and moving various pieces. After a while, the game finally came to a close, Hermann calling checkmate.
Shiro just sat back and laughed.
"I guess I’m not as good as I used to be."
"In retrospect, I should have baked the cake before icing it."
*clearly trying not to laugh*

"You said burning water was impossible, so explain why the smoke detector’s going off."
"I honesty don't know. Maybe, um, the water boiled too much...? Boiling water does give off steam."

"Hi! Dad's not in the lab at the moment, but..."
"Maybe I can help?"
things are changin' || hermann
"Hermann," Newt calls, skidding to a halt in front of the other man's desk. He knows he shouldn't do this in the lab, because professionalism is still important... right?
"Hermann, I have a proposition for you." He spins him around in his chair and grins widely at the look of abject horror on that annoyingly handsome face of his. He picks up one of Hermann's hands, turns it over, and presses a blue envelope into his palm.
"Before you open it and freak out on me, yeah -- they're one-way tickets. There's nothing here for us anymore, and we both know it. Maybe we can teach? Buy a house, get a cat, see your family, see my family. Think about it," he says. "But quickly, because the flight leaves at the ass crack of dawn tomorrow."
