From their position on the top of the garden wall the manor house seemed to briefly ripple. Strange, Isotope thought, but perhaps they did need to clean some of the grime off the lenses of their mask. Besides, it mattered little at the moment. The thing Pumpkin Patch had seenâand wantedâhad just rounded the far corner of the building so they needed to get a move on or they were going to lose it completely. Speaking of the Pumpkin theyâd just clambered their way over the front gate so Isotope leapt down from the wall, landing in time to look up and see a man running in their direction.
Well shit. Guess they werenât supposed to be in here butâŠ
âIsotopeeâŠ?â The Pumpkin had approached, looming behind them. Their one glowing eye flickering between the carved out sockets on their gourd skull as they looked between the rat and the approaching man. It was clear what they were really asking; what do we do now?
Well, in Isotopeâs opinion, the answer was pretty obvious. âRun.âÂ
They both took off, Isotope sprinting on all fours across the lawn towards the corner of the house, giving the approaching man a wide berth in case he tried to lunge at them. Interestingly he didnât seem to care at all, in fact he barely looked at Isotope as they shot past.Â
Alright? Well, they werenât going to complain.
They leapt over the garden path, skidding in the grass as they made to turn towards the corner of the house andâ
Pain.
It spiked through them, twisting sharply, and suddenly in their gut. Isotope faltered, stumbling to the ground in shock as another sharp stab ripped through them.Â
How? They thought briefly, theyâd been so careful. Nothing could have been laced could it? No, theyâd refused anythingâeverythingâoffered.
A fresh wave of nausea hit them, their insides protesting in agony, bile rising in their throat. Old instincts returned as they curled up tight, hugging their legs tight to their chest, a whimper escaping them as they did so.
Not again. Not after getting to experience what it was like to feel⊠not like this.Â
Eye squeezed shut, Isotope was barely aware of the sudden rain as the ever oppressive feeling worsened. Theyâd been so foolish to think theyâd gotten away. Foolish to think they were free. They were barely aware of footsteps approaching. They were coming with the next dose, for the next test. Hands grabbed, trying to lift. Donât touch me! They tried to scream but it only gave out as a guttural anguished yell as they curled up even tighter, desperate to hide away.Â
All they felt was the pain. All they knew was the pain. It was all they had ever known. It was all they will ever know. Perhaps everything else had just been a dream. Had it been great? Fuck no, but it had been better.Â
But now they were back. The hiss of rain and murmur of voices around them twisting into the old familiar sounds they had always known. Hands again. This time Isotope did not resist as they were lifted.Â
Do what you wantâŠ. Kill me this time. They thought weakly before they finally let their mind slip away into the comforting void of nothing.Â
âŠ
âŠâŠ
âŠâŠâŠ
âŠâŠâŠâŠ
Gradually Isotope became aware that the pain was subsiding. That ever pressing feeling of doom was lessening its grip. That the perpetual hissing noise had muffled and the voices subsided. They stirred, gradually testing out with a paw. A floor. They cracked open one eye. Walls. They were in some kind of building. Near them, a dark quiet corner. Slowly they shifted, inching into the space, curling up against the walls. Safe.
Pathetic. They thought as they closed their eyes again, theyâd endured so much worse than this, and theyâd reacted like it was the first time all over again. The pain had been manageable, they should have handled it better. It hadnât even been that long, theyâd gotten soft. Theyâ
âIsotope? Can you hear me?â
Iso..topeâŠ
âIsotope?â
Isotope⊠Right, thatâs me.
Slowly they open an eye, peeking out from under their hood. Big blue eyes stared back at them. The girl⊠from⊠the train. Right. Hâ no the name wouldnât come, not much did their mind still numb. She was staring, watching as they slowly registered her.
âWeâre moving onââ
Her words slurred together in Isotopeâs mind as they struggled to process them.
ââWe need you.â
Needed them? Why would anyone need them? Whyâ
Fingers ran through their fur, tracing old scars, skimming past freshly sutured wounds. The lights above were blinding, eye watering, so that the figure looming above was no more than a blurry shadow. âYouâre doing so well.â They whisper, the hand moving up their body, cupping Isotopeâs jaw, stroking it with a foul affection. âLittle Weapon.âÂ
They suppressed a shudder at the memory. Right, they were a Weapon. Well, they had killed that train... As much as one can kill a train. Clearly this group had already realized their potential and wanted them to be there to take out whatever was next.
That made sense.Â
âCan you stand?â Train Girl, Hâwhatever, was still talking to them. Slowly she rose from her crouch as Isotope shifted, clearly responsive.Â
Slowly they got to their feet, trembling, their body not yet recovered from its earlier breakdown. They stagger, and cast out wildly for something, anything, to catch their fall.Â
Claws snag in fabric. Train Girl's pant leg. She looks down at them, leaning to offer a hand. âDo you wantâŠ?â
Isotope turns away, pointedly ignoring the gesture, but tightens their grip on the fabric. Pathetic. They think again. That they need to hold on at all, that their stupid limbs wonât stop stupidly shaking. Awkwardly they shuffle along beside the doll, forcing her to take much smaller steps. Bringing up the rear of the group as they head out of the room they woke in and into a dark and dingy hallway.
Isotope follows numbly, their thoughts a jumble of foggy questions with even foggier answers. Where the fuck are we? A dingy ass house? How the fuck did we even get here? No clue. What the fuck is going on? Werenât we in that town a second ago?
Their jumbled thoughts are suddenly ripped from their mind as a loud shrieking sound tears through them. Music? The worst music ever possibly. They clap their paws over their hooded ears. It at least has the effect of being so horribly jarring that it clears away the remainder of the fog still clinging to their mind.
Train Girlâs moved as if trying to stand in front and block them, but Isotope peers easily around her legs at this new room they were unaware they had even entered. Dingy, with strange shapes and clutter forming looming dark shadows that seem to ripple, forming into⊠weasels?
Weasels!
âYou!â Isotope barks, pointing at the nearest one. The memory of the chase, of being dragged along by Pumpkin Patch as they charged through town after their target, this thing. The garden wall, the House⊠This house!  It all came rushing back to them. âYouâre the reason Iâm in here!â

Hey, gang! Christmas is almost here, and I wanted to try a little writing exercise that you can benefit from. I'll open my inbox for you to send in a matchup request. Here's what you need to know:
I will only be doing 10 Matchups. First-come, first-served.
My understanding of a few characters is lacking, specifically Savanaclaw, Epel, and Jamil (Idia is on the line). If you're a good fit for them, I'll mention it, but it will not be as detailed as the other ones.
I don't have a word estimate, but I plan to be as thorough as I can. This will mostly be a character analysis and thought experiment on how your relationship might work.
Now, the thing that separates this Matchup from others is I want you to tell me who you want/fancy, and I'll tell you why I think you'd work out or wouldn't.
Here's what I need to know: (and don't change yourself for a man! Be honest so you can have a happy fictional relationship!)
Core Personality Traits and Vibe (relaxed, disciplined, patient, creative, etc)
Values (......being your best self, helping others, etc)
Biggest Strength in General (creative problem solving, resilience, empathetic, good listener, etc)
Biggest Struggle in General (time management, anxiety, communication, etc)
Biggest Strength in a Relationship (ability to keep calm, provide reassurance, making your partner feel better/more comfortable by joking or listening, etc)
Biggest Weakness in a Relationship (Do you trust people enough to be honest? Do you phrase things in a way that sometimes hurts people? Are you an accidental doormat? Avoidant? Too confrontational? etc)
Hobbies... or Hyperfixations
Moral Code
Love Language: Giving and Receiving
What Dorm would you be in and Why?
What Characters do you Gravitate toward?
Who Do You Want?
Alright, be as detailed and honest as you can, and send me your requests. Good luck and thank you!
Make the effort to say "nonspeaking" instead of "nonverbal." It's not nitpicking or semantics or a tiny difference. Nonspeaking autistics have words and use them, just not with their mouths. Everyone uses nonverbal speech, not everyone uses their mouths.
EDIT: Absolutely of course defer to how the person you're speaking to prefers to be described.
âI prefer nonspeaking as I understand all language. Non-verbal suggests I donât understand language and doesnât represent how I love languag
Belatedly sharing this here, but this was written for my dear friend Read's (@amusingdisplacement) birthday back in August! Happy birthday again!! <3

âI cannot believe the mouth on herââ
âYou get back here right now!â
Dominik slammed the door to his aunt's house, the glass of it shaking, muting the shouting he was leaving behind with increasingly rapid footsteps. Blood and breath roared in his ears as he broke into a run. The soles of his chucks slapped against the sidewalk.
He needed to go. To run. To get the fuck away from here. It was that or listen to the terrifyingly calm voice that lurked under the furious mess of his thoughts. He bolted instead.
Driven by instinct alone, he veered onto the path that led between all the dull suburban homes and hoped his parents weren't trying to follow him. They would never go so far as to run after him, they'd never cause such a scene, but he wouldn't put it past them to patrol in their car around the neighbourhood he was running to. His head start would only get him so far, especially when he hadn't stopped to tie his shoes.
Dom felt the jerk on his foot too late. Laces trapped under his other foot, he went sprawling across the trail. He barely caught himself on bony palms and joints, managed to only graze his chin, teeth clacking, instead of his face. It forced up a sound he choked down, desperate to keep it inside until he could get to Keziah. Panting, he scrambled to his feet, shoved the laces down beside his ankles, and stumbled back into a run.
By the time he got to their neighbourhood his chest was burning. Every breath left his throat raw. His legs and feet ached. To run the whole way was stupid but he couldn't fucking slow down.
Before he broke out into the main street, Dom stalled in the gloom between houses. The yellow streetlights had flickered on moments ago, pools of buzzing light drawing moths to the quiet road. He could feel that awful buzzing under his skin. A car going by made him flinch, but, thankfully, it wasn't his parentsâ sedan. Nothing else drove by, so he made one last mad dash.
The familiar houses were a blur. None of them even registered until he spotted the one he needed to see. He ran faster, nearly losing a shoe when he thundered up to the door, knocking rapidly before he let himself in with the key he'd been given.
Ma de Leon's confused voice could be heard from the living room. âDominik? What's wrong?â
But Dom didn't answer, just kicked off his stupid fucking shoes gasped out, âZiah?â
âIn their room, sweetie, but whatâhold on, what happened to your hands?â
Again he didn't answer. He was too focused, too panicked. He took the stairs two at a time and let his sore feet automatically carry him to the right door, cracked open enough for faint music to filter through.
Kez sat up in zir bed, already in pajamas and a bonnet, setting zir magazine aside and frowning as soon as ze saw him in the doorway. âDom? Whâwhoaâ!â
His legs nearly gave out from relief, but he cut them off by all but tackling them. As soon as Dom felt Ziah's arms around him, as soon as he could curl up into their body and tangle himself around the one person he loved and could trust, the unbearable, horrid weight in his chest finally cracked him open.
âZiah,â he croaked, and that was it. The tears spilled over, his chest hitched and shuddered, and the sobs he'd locked away ripped out of his rough throat. Dom dug his fingers into Kez and clung so hard it must have hurt, but ve just held him tighter and pressed vir head into his. Fuck, he hated this. Hated all of it. Despised forcing Kez to hold his jagged edges together like this. But he didn't have anywhere else to go, and that voice was rising to the surface, and nothing felt right or safe until he got here. He needed Ziah too much to have done anything else.
Ze held Dom through all the shaking and sobbing and hiccups. He had no clue how long they stayed like this, wrapped up like they were one being, trying to be the thing humans were before Zeus split them in two. At one point Ma de Leon checked in and Dom heard a half-whispered what happened, and felt Kez shrug and shake their head. Later, the phone rang downstairs, but Kez ignored it, and Señor de Leonâs indecipherable voice echoed up the stairwell.
This whole thing was so stupid. He felt guilty for barging in on Kezâs night like this. Making such a big fucking deal out of something heâd known forever. It shouldnât feel like heâd been slapped in the face by a bus, but his parents never seemed to run out of ways to rip his heart out and make it feel like it was his fault they crushed it in their hands.
When Dom finally wore himself outâsobs reduced to loud, wet snifflesâZiah let out a long breath and kissed the top of his head. Their grip on his relaxed enough to start rubbing up and down his back. A shuddering sigh, and Dom went limp against them.
Quietly, his voice hoarse, he said, âGot snot on your shirt.â He felt Kezâs tiny laugh.
âYeah, I can feel it,â ze said. âSâokay, though.â Neither of them spoke again for a few moments. Dom focused on breathing without his chest hitching, mostly failing. Now he could actually feel the places heâd scraped raw when he fell as his hands, arms, and knees throbbed. Kez just kept running their hands along his back. But then he felt Kez inhale like ze was going to say something, pause, and then do it again. He braced for it.
âWhat happened, Nikki?â
Dom grit his teeth, screwed his eyes shut against a fresh wave of tears and tightness under his ribs. âMy parents happened, what else,â he forced out through the painful lump in his throat.
âI thought they were leaving you alone?â
Swallowing the tension down, he scoffed bitterly. âNope. Turns out Aunt Linda was keeping them updated on every-fucking-thing I did all summer. I knew it, kinda, butâŠâ
âWhat a bitch,â Kez spat.
He laughed hollowly. âUh-huh. The haircut was the final straw.â Kez ran a soothing hand through his thick, dark hair, which theyâd cut short a few days ago and their Mama had fixed up after. âSheâd told them about it when I went to school yesterday and they ambushed me when I got back today. Said I shouldâve gotten over this phase already, theyâd been forgiving about the âboyâs clothesâ even if it was embarrassing for them, but this was âone step too far,ââ Dom mocked with a sneer, but the disgust and anger fled quickly, leaving him feeling⊠empty. âThey just fucking⊠screamed at me about how I should get my head on straight already. IâI yelled back but they wouldnât fucking listen.â
Kezâs hands paused as he spoke, nails digging in for a second when heâd mentioned his parentsâ embarrassment. âTheyâre fucking awful,â she said, voice flat but low and furious.
âI left the worst for last.â
âIs it going to make me want to kill them harder?â
âYep.â
âGreat. Fantastic. What did they do.â
As he worked up the energy to tell zir, Dom found himself feeling oddly removed, distant. The music from Kezâs stereo faded out, the pattern on zir pjs right in front of his face blurring. He felt like he was back in his auntâs living room again, his mother slapping the pamphlet down on the coffee table between them and pointing at it with her tastefully manicured fingernail while his blood ran cold.
âShe threatened to send me to a camp if I didnât go home immediately and stop this nonsense,â he said tonelessly. Ziah went stiff in his arms. âSo I told her she could shove that fucking pamphlet so far up her ass itâll come out of her mouth covered in shit and ran.â
That got a short laugh out of Kez, but they were still tense, gripping the back of Domâs too-large shirt. âYou were right, Iâm going to fucking murder them.â
âYeah, get in line,â he joked, half-hearted.
âWasââ Ze paused, clearly debating whether ze should ask this or not. âDid they bringâŠ?â
It took a second to realise what they were asking, but when it clicked Domâs face twisted as he was shoved back into himself, only to feel every bit of guilt and grief and rage flooding back into his throat. âHe looked at me like I was disgusting, Ziah,â he choked out, chest heaving around a shaky inhale, and he started crying again. Kezâs arms tightened almost painfully around him.
Ziahâs voice was thick when they said, âIâm sorry, Nikki. Iâm so sorry.â
Calming down this time was faster, but only due to how exhausted Dom was. He felt hollowed out but heavy, leaden enough that Kez should be struggling to hold him. Their arm under his torso must have started to go to sleep by now, but they didnât move or complain and he added that to the list of things he felt guilty about tonight. And he was about to add a few more.
âCould⊠could you drive me to my auntâs so I can get all my stuff?â he asked.
âYou have clothes here though. Or, are you going to actually stay here?â
He shrugged. âMight be easier to get it all while itâs dark. And if I wait my aunt might lock the window, if she hasnât already. Or my parents might trash it all.â
Kez finally pulled away to be able to look at Dom, smiling with relief. Despite everything, they were excited by the thought of Dom finally staying with them. âSure, let's go. Iâll tell Mama Iâm borrowing the car.â They pressed a few kisses to his lips which Dom returned gratefully, both of them reluctant to let the other go. Outside the shelter of Kezâs body Dom could feel the tear tracks and snot making his skin tight.
They both clambered out of Kezâs bed, Kez linking their fingers with his to lead him downstairs again, socked feet a quiet staccato on the steps. The house was dark now, but there was a low glow of warm light from the kitchen. Dom didnât think to look at Kezâs alarm clock to see the time, but he guessed theyâd been up there for a couple hours.
Ma and Señor de Leon were talking in low voices in the kitchen by the light of the range hood, but paused when he and Kez came into view. âHowâre you feeling, mijo?â Señor de Leon asked, a kind tilt to his head, and though the endearment eased something in his chest, Dom could only shrug, not quite able to meet his eye.Â
âCome here and let me see those hands, Dominik.â Ma de Leon gestured with her own hand, and Kez made a noise of confusion. Pulling his hand up by their tangled fingers, ze bent his wrist to expose the raw, reddened skin of the heel of his palm, to motion making him wince.
âNikki. What happened?â
Embarrassment coloured Dom cheeks and he pursed his lips. âI didnât tie my lacesâŠâ
Rolling their eyes, Kez sighed and mumbled an oh my god before pushing him towards their mama. âYou should have told me.â
He rolled his eyes in return as he stumbled towards Ma de Leon, who said, âBetter now than never,â as took him by the wrist and guided him to the sink, an open first aid kit already waiting. She was firm, but kind, as she ran his hands under warm water, held him still while she sanitised the wounds, abraded skin stinging from the alcohol. âYour parents called,â she said after a moment. He tensed automatically, heart rate racing. âI know, but we told them weâll take care of you, alright? You can stay for as long as you need.â
She tried to look at him, but Domâs eyes flicked to the floor. She hummed.
âMama, can we borrow the car to go get his things?â Kez asked. âWe should do it before they lock him out or something.â
Ma briefly looked at Señor while she bandaged Domâs hands, and whatever married people telepathy occurred had Señor on his feet with a groan. âAlright, but be safe. Donât go climbing into windows if thereâs a patrol car in the neighbourhood.â
âYeah, we arenât stupid,â ze shot back with a smile, following their dad to the foyer.
Domâs hands were released, and Ma nodded with her chin that he should follow, so he scurried after them. He liked Kezâs parents, but they were so drastically different from his own that he always felt wrong-footed around them, afraid that if he did one wrong thing that kindness would vanish. It wasnât like heâd ever done anything to deserve it.
Señor traded the keys for Kezâs bonnet while Dom slipped into his shoes and tied them. As Kez opened the door, Ma de Leon rounded the corner and held the first aid kit out to Dom.
He frowned. âUhââ
âJust in case,â she insisted, one eyebrow raised at him. Confused as he was, Dom wasnât about to refuse it, so he took it with mumbled gratitude and followed Kez out the door.
The drive was spent keeping an eye out for police, but they didnât see any on the extra lap they took around his auntâs neighbourhood. While all the lights were off at the house, and Domâs parentsâ car wasnât there anymore, Kez still parked a few houses down, under a tree.
From there, sneaking in was easy. Theyâd done it so much that it was second nature to scale the wisteria trellis and wedge his window open. Dom could never tell if his aunt was aware theyâd been doing this; it wasnât like they were that careful about the plant, but she had never locked the window, and tonight was no different. When the window slid open, Dom sighed, let his head hang for a moment, before hauling himself in and pulling Kez in after him.
All he had to carry stuffâthat they could still bring down the trellisâwas a backpack and messenger bag, so Kez silently took his backpack and started filling it with some of his clothes, while Dom grabbed important shit. IDs, pictures of him and Ziah, the one picture of him and his brother, his secret cash stash, a couple books and knick-knacks. Last minute, he grabbed the cellphone that was still under his parentsâ plan, but he was going to use that shit until they noticed and cut it off. Getting back out with the bags was harder, but they made it to the ground safely, and booked it to the car.
âHoly shit,â Dom laughed, running on the last of his adrenaline, âI canât believe it worked!â He flopped back into the passenger seat and put his hands over his face. âYou just pulled a heist in your pyjamas.â
âI did. Only for you, Nikki. If I put a hole in them Iâm going to make you mend it,â Kez teased, sagging into the seat. âIâm so fucking glad the window wasnât locked.â
âFuck, me too.â
Dom turned to smile at Kez, his heart swelling at the sight of his best friend grinning back, gap-toothed and gorgeous. He loved them so much.
âLetâs get you home,â they said, smile widening, and Domâs heart sank to the floor.
He was dreading this. And Kez saw it on his face.
â...Dom?â
Floundering, and after a couple false starts, Dom made himself look at Kez and whispered, âI have to go, Ziah.â
âNo.â
âZiahââ
âYou canât.â
He almost choked on the words. âI canât stay with you.â
âWhy?â Ziahâs face was a mess of anger and panic when they rounded on him. âWhy do you always refuse?! Youâd be safe and okay and I love you, Nikki, you canât leaveâ!â Zir voice broke a bit and ze looked away, jaw muscles tensing and their hands gripped the steering wheel hard enough to make the plastic squeak.
Dom had never felt more like scum in his entire life. But heâd thought it through. His mind was made up.
âIâif I stay, my parents could still get me back, call the police on your parents or⊠or, I donât know, something else shitty. And if that doesnât work, my mother could probably bribe the hospital board to make Mamaâs work awful, or get her fired.â He didnât know if that would work, but sheâd done similar enough things before that he could see it happening, and just the thought of being the cause of something like that made him feel awful. He couldnât bear it. âThey⊠if I stay, theyâre going to do anything to get me back and⊠fucking fix me,â Dom spat.
Ziah stared out the windshield. When ze blinked, Dom saw tears rolling down their cheek, briefly catching the light like a tiny star winking out on zir dark skin. The corner of zir lips twitched downward, and they swallowed.
âFine.â Their voice shook. Somehow, Ziah giving in just made Dom feel worse. âWhere are you going?â
âI donât know. Thought Iâd bus to San Francisco. Or LA.â
At barely a whisper, Kez asked, âDoes it have to be tonight?â And Domâs heart smashed to bits.
âThey might warn the police Iâm a runaway risk if I wait.â
âYou are a runaway risk,â they accused.
Dom grimaced, turning his gaze to the floor. âIâm so sorry, Ziah,â he said.
âIf you were that sorry, youâd stay.âÂ
His nails dug into the strap of his seatbelt. Dom had no response, remorse sticking his tongue in place. The following silence in the car was oppressive and only interrupted by a sniff from Kez.
Then they started the car, got into gear, and pulled into the street. The drive was terrible, only because neither of them could speak. Dom couldnât look at Kez, even when they came up to the four-way stop that led either to the city centre or to Kezâs neighbourhood and Kez paused for way too long before driving on towards the city.
The small, dingy bus station held a few tired people. The schedule above the ticket kiosk said a southward bus would be arriving in an hour. Kez hovered by Domâs side and he paid for his ticket, and when they sat in the uncomfortable plastic chairs, ze hit him in the stomach with the first aid kit.
âYou forgot this in the car.â
Dom frowned at it again. âMama didnât give it to meââ
Scoffing, Kez crossed zir arms and glared at the man behind the kiosk for the sin of selling Dom his ticket. âYes, she did. I thought it was weird, but I guess she figured you out before I did.â
The red canvas stood out against his blue jeans. He squished the sides of it, the zipper digging into the pads of his fingers. How had she known? Without another comment, he stuffed it into his messenger bag and sat back to wait out the hour.
âYou⊠you donât have to wait with me,â Dom said after hearing Kez huff.
âFuck you.â
And that was all they said until the bus arrived. Eventually Kez had slumped sideways in vir chair so their shoulders touched and Dom leaned into vir, unable to resist hooking their pinkies together. Kez twitched like ve wanted to pull away, but instead squeezed his finger tight and did not let go, letting him feel welcome to hide his face in vir hair. The gesture both hurt and eased a little of the fear that heâd irreversibly fucked this up; Kez was pissed at him, but still loved him anyway. Even if he was leaving.
The loudspeaker fuzzed to life and announced, âSouthbound bus 3095, destination Los Angeles, arriving in ten minutes. Please have ID and tickets ready for boarding.â
Kezâs pinkie squeezed tighter and Dom kissed the side of their head.
He didnât want to go. God, fuck, he didnât want to leave them and he despised himself for going anyway.
The other people in the station rose and started forming a line by the door to the bay, their quiet chatter filling the room. Dom tugged on Kezâs finger and got them both to their feet, holding hands as they joined the line. The bus pulled in, the doors opened, and Dom dully marched with Kez into the cool, early autumn evening.
âText me every day,â Kez said hoarsely as the doors drew closer. âNo. Call me every day. Text me every hour.â
Domâs short laugh was tight. âOkay, I will.â
âFucking promise.â
âI fucking promise.â
âDonât get cute with me, that promise has to be real,â Kez sniffled.
âItâsâitâs a real fucking promise.â
Kezâs grip on his hand was getting painful. âGood.â
On the platform of the bus bay, people were dropping off their luggage and saying their goodbyes if they had someone to say goodbye to before the driver checked their tickets and let them climb the stairs to the bus. It was an organised commotion that Dom was hesitating to join. He fully stalled a few feet away from the driver, his bags a thousand pounds and threatening to drag him to his scuffed up knees. The people behind him grumbled and began to file past him.
âYou can still stay.â
Kez sounded so small that he finally looked at them for the first time that whole hour. They were crying again, shoulders shaking as they tried to keep their misery under control, giving him a pleading look that completely broke Dom down again. He let out a small wounded noise, dropped his backpack and reeled them in, both of them wrapping each other up so hard it squeezed the air from their lungs.
âI love you, Ziah. I l-love you so much, Iâm sorry,â he croaked.
Ze buried zir face in his neck. âI love you too, Nikki,â Kez managed to say, âeven if youâre a giant idiot.â
Domâs laughter was wet. He didnât have a comeback, they were right.
âLast chance, kids,â the driver called out. Dom pulled back and saw that everyone had boarded, the luggage almost all loaded, and swore under his breath.
âOne second.â Seeing the driver sigh, but nod, Dom cupped Ziahâs face between his palms and kissed zir. Their tears mixed on their faces and Kez dug zir fingers into his neck and kissed him back. It was a little messy, a lot desperate. âLove you,â he whispered, and Ziah could only nod.
Dom stepped back. They kept a hand on each other for as long as they could, but three steps and their hands fell away. He kept looking over his shoulder at Kez as the driver checked his ticket and ID with an amused smile, and he climbed inside, quickly finding a lucky seat on the opposite side of the bus. Kez jogged around so ze could still see him, and they watched each other as the bus rumbled to life, backed up, and began to pull away. Kez followed it along the platform, and Dom put a hand over his mouth to stifle his sobs, refusing to look away.
He watched the spot where Kez disappeared behind the building for a long time afterward.

Okay. Fucking promise
A year was a long time, Dom decided. It wasnât really. It had gone by fast. But it was a long time to be away from Kez. Too fucking long.
If he hadnât left, he wouldnât be lying on the sidewalk outside the shelter clutching at his ribs, his face red and sore and probably going to turn a beautiful shade of purple. Trying to sit up, he inhaled sharply, biting his lip but immediately regretting it when it pulled on the part that split open.
He was such a fucking moron. He shouldâve kept his mouth shut. Shouldâve stopped himself, because he knew it would get him kicked out of the shelter for misconduct and beaten by the assholes heâd shouted at.
Dom tried to get up again and grunted through the pain until he was on his feet again. At least they hadnât mugged him. Itâd be too obvious for them to go back to the shelter with his bass and amp in tow.
Fuck. There werenât any more shelters open. This one had been his last chance at a good spot to hunker down at while the weather got colder.
He had to bite the final fucking bullet. He was 18 now, if he went back his parents couldnât do shit about it.
He didnât want to go back. Not like this. He was pathetic as fuck like this.
There were no other options.
Kez would be at college by now though. They wouldnât have to see this.
Pulling out his shitty, busted up phone, Dom stared at it like it would magically have data again if he just glared hard enough. It didnât happen, of course.
Shit.
Dom shifted his bag further up his shoulders and picked up the amp with his good side, picked up his bass in the other hand with a pained wince, and started walking towards the nearest pawn shop.
The familiar house loomed above him, silhouetted by the sun setting behind it. Though the curtains were drawn, he could still briefly see the silhouettes of the family inside, milling around as they set up for dinner.
Dom didn't want to be here.
This was such a dumb idea.
But he raised his hand to knock on the door anyway, hearing the voices behind the door but not fully realising who it was, because it couldnât be them. Then the door opened, and panic and relief and shame and joy in equal, chaotic measure overwhelmed him. So of course, he said:
"What the fuck are you doing here?"
"...don't want whatever you're sellingâDom?"
The next thing he knew, he was on the ground in front of the de Leonâs house, a familiar weight on top of him, clinging to him, and through the ache in his ribs and the awful storm of emotions in his chest Dom finally felt a missing piece of himself click back into place where it belonged.

People still think that just because Steven and the Crystal Gems didn't kill The Diamonds, that means they were redeemed. That's not true at all.
The Diamonds couldn't be killed because, without them, all of the corrupted gems would've stayed corrupted, all the colonies they made would've stayed colonized, the armies would still be around, not to mention the massive amounts of damage they caused on Homeworld. Steven and the Gems had convinced them to fix a problem that they had caused.
If the Diamonds were truly redeemed, then they would've abandoned their royal status to live on Earth, and be all buddy-buddy with Steven, the Gems, and all the humans on Earth, but they didn't. They still saw themselves as superior and still thought Earth was some ugly worthless dirtball, with Steven being the only good thing about it. So kept their distance from Steven and the Gems. They have no interest in being anyone's friends. They only cared about getting their sister back, which didn't happen. Even in Future, where the Diamonds seemingly do good things, it's all in service of boosting their ego and impressing Steven. The only reason they took in Spinel was because she was the closest they'll ever get to having Pink Diamond back. They couldn't get Steven, they had too many weird feelings towards the Rose Quartz soldiers, Pink Pearl's minds was too broken, so they settled for Pink's favorite toy (they even marvel at how entertaining Spinel was).
Not killing and redemption are two VERY different things, and it's impressive how many people still don't understand that. What I like about Steven Universe is it's one of the few kids shows that ACTUALLY tackles the subject of pacifism. People misinterpret pacifism as letting evil people get away with doing whatever they want, when that isn't true. Pacifism is using empathy, and some logic, to reason with and fundamentally change a person's viewpoint rather than simply killing them. Batman, when he's written correctly, does the same thing.
Now don't get it twisted. I can name quite a few folks who deserve to die. What Steven Universe is saying, is killing won't solve all of the core issues. If the Diamonds were executed, like I said, several broken things would stay broken forever. Steven and the Gems needed to at least convince the Diamonds to fix their own mistakes for the greater good. Even if their good deeds aren't altruistic, they're still using their power, which no one else has, to improve the quality of life for the gems that don't want to or aren't able to live on Earth or any other planet. Their core personalities also didn't change. They were selfish spoiled queens in the beginning of the series, and they're still selfish spoiled queens by the end of the series. The only change is they stopped abusing their immense power to cause harm. Since they're still in power, they also won't allow someone even worse to swoop in and abuse their power to cause harm. That's why pacifism was the most logical route for the show to take.
So, in conclusion, the Diamonds never have nor will ever be redeemed. If you want to see a 14-year-old boy solve his problems by committing murder, then watch shonen anime.
Does anyone else ever think about the fact that Jaskier is a Viscount?
Like, yes, obviously other people do, but I think about it a lot.
Because he was a viscount, right? I doubt he still is one. See, during this time period, actors and musicians and performers in general were seen as undesirable, and were considered subpar to even 'peasants' of the time. I doubt Jaskier's parents would have wanted him around had he been clearly pursuing music. All of these fanfictions in which Jaskier has been stripped of his title make SO much sense when you think about it in this context.
However, I have never read the books. I have no idea if Jaskier ever meets his parents in cannon, or of they're truly mentioned, but Jaskier does (as far as I know) go about in the games, books, and show (only once there though) announcing he is a viscount. Or, at least that that is his title. If Jaskier ever meets his parents in the books, and he is welcomed home warmly, then feel free to ignore all of this.
If not, then I have no reason not to believe that it is, in fact, cannon that Jaskier's parents revoked his title and he is only a Viscount of Lettenhove by blood and nothing more. I doubt he holds power there, and I doubt his parents want him there. I am also aware of the fact the he seems to hardly speak of his parents, hence them not even being named in the books.
This brings me to yet another very important thing (that I think is cannon) that's brought up all the time in fic- Jaskier talks all the time, yet never of his familial life. This could either be because he doesn't want to think of them, is humiliated by what happened with them, or any number of reasons that don't fit the narrative I'm spinning here. All I'm saying is that I really, truly believe that people who write fanfics where Jaskier's parents have removed him from their family line are hitting the nail right on the head, and there is a lot of evidence to support that claim.
