On the road, Denmark
HELSINGOR -> DANMARK / DENEMARK / DANIA
Kronborg Castle is located on the island of Zealand in the town of Helsingør, Denmark. The Renaissance castle was originally built as a stronghold by King Eric VII in the 1420s. Together with fortress Karman, once part of the Danish fortress Helsingborg, it controlled the entrance to the Baltic Sea. For 400 years, the royal castle served as the headquarters for collecting Sound Dues, which filled the king’s coffers. These tolls were used for income as well as a political tool, making the castle a powerful symbol of Denmark’s influence.
King Frederick II transformed Kronborg into a Renaissance castle between 1574 and 1585. He embellished it with sandstone, copper roofs, and ornate spires. Court life ended abruptly when a fire destroyed much of the building in 1629, but King Christian IV ordered its reconstruction. Over the centuries, the castle endured conflict and was once conquered by the Swedish army. From 1688 to 1690, its defenses were reinforced with ramparts.
From 1785 to 1922, the castle was under military administration and its role as a royal residence diminished. Between 1739 and the early 1900s, it served as a prison, with convicts laboring to fortify and repair the structure. The Royal Danish Army vacated the castle in 1923, and after extensive renovations, it opened to the public in 1938.
Kronborg Castle consists of four wings surrounding a central courtyard. Its interior features a 16th century chapel, royal apartments, the Little Hall adorned with tapestries, and a 60-meter ballroom complete with a large fireplace, wood carvings, gilding, marble flooring, and brass chandeliers. Known as Elsinore in William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, Kronborg Castle became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 and remains open to visitors today.
