Ch 98: "His Majesty hides all his thoughts by smiling." One of the aspects of this romance is that Heinrey is sincerely ecstatic to be with Navier. He lets through the occasional display of self-consciousness or disappointment, but what makes this a romance that I enjoy is that with Navier, he's not manipulative, controlling, angry, moody, bitchy, selfish, etc--he doesn't take out his negative emotions on her (like the opposite of Sovieshu). My idea of romance and a good relationship is emotional and physical safety. I know some people enjoy like, volatile aggression or whatever, but that's not what I'm here for.

So why is it awesome and cute that Heinrey is always excited to see Navier but gross and creepy when Rashta is always excited to see Sovieshu? Heinrey is genuinely expressing his emotion. Rashta is performing a cutesy, childish persona designed to trigger the male protective instinct because she sees Sovieshu as her ticket to survival. She a golddigger. Rashta has a lot of internal monologues written out that clearly relay her motivations. Heinrey has very few thought bubbles in comparison. Maybe that's a sign of honesty. Maybe the narrative is hiding something.

Ch 99: So mortified (probably also other things) that Navier saw him at the fountain. And then, yay hand-holding! He has simple desires. It's adorable

Ch 99: Heinrey clearly has sharing food as a sign of affection, meanwhile with Sovieshu, Navier had 2 or less meals per week with him, at opposite ends of a long table. Like everything with Heinrey is the opposite of Sovieshu and she does not know how to understand it.

Ch 99: Laying on the flirtatious charm so hard now that he knows Navier was more embarrassed than angry

Ch 103: Is he going to invade the Eastern Empire on his wedding day? That's some serious multitasking

Ch 106: he's so happy to receive any amount of reassurance

I think he understands at this point that Navier isn't offended, scared, or disinterested, so the confident charm comes out.

Ch 110: Got to be honest, if my husband were a shapeshifter, I would snuggle with him in animal form all the time. Animal cuddles are so relaxing and I hope my husband would not yell and run away like the cats do.

Ch 111: "The situation below is not good..."

Ch 113: "I cannot leave my wife with another angry man." Yes, good. Also Navier grabbing Heinrey's hand and outrightly rejecting Sovieshu, what a power move

Ch 63: I don't know how many times Heinrey has outright said "I want you to be my queen," but this is the one that counts. It's ironic that Navier made the choice as a political strategy, because Heinrey is ticking the boxes of the 3 aspects of romance: sometime who is really happy to be with you, someone who genuinely cares about you/takes care of you, and someone you find sexually attractive. (Not necessarily in order of importance. Depends on the person.)

Navier has never had a romantic relationship, and she probably was not sexually attracted to Sovieshu. (She is, on the other hand, interested in Heinrey's muscles.) Every choice she's made in her life was for political strategy. She cultivates friendships, and considers Heinrey to be one of her closest friends, but she doesn't know how that can progress into romance.

Of course, the best part of this chapter is when Navier blue screens at the end of their conversation and Heinrey instantly drops his flirty playboy act, forgets his self-consciousness, and is only concerned with Navier's well-being. Now that's hot.

He calls her by name for the first time in the story.

Ch 20: Heinrey rejects Rashta again 😂

Ch 20: I'm gonna talk about Duke Ergi for a sec. First off, he looks exactly how I would imagine anime Oscar Wilde, so that's fun. Also he has huge Oscar Wilde troll vibes. Just manipulating dummies, weaponizing flirtation, mocking someone too subtly for the subject to notice. The "plan" has not been addressed yet in the story, but I think it's brilliant to have an war agent that is sent more than a year in advance, who uses social engineering to destabilize the throne; not only weakening the popular estimation of the emperor by advising Rashta with the worst ideas so she continually looks bad to the people as well, but then installing her, unliked and unskilled, as the empress, where her inability to do the job will strongly disempower the nation's economy, education, and military. You want to take over the Eastern Empire? You have to play the long game.

Ch 28: Heinrey is embarrassed to realize that he likes Navier a lot more than he expected to.

Ch 29: "What a surprise running into you here! :D" bruh I can't believe Navier isn't seeing right through that

Ch 30: Queen attempts to pick up Navier and fly with her. I think this guy is literally dumber in bird form 🤦‍♀️

Ch 35: How to get revenge on those who hurt you. Solution 1: Take an outstandingly handsome and high-ranking man as your lover. Solution 2: Ask Prince Heinrey

Ch 35: Heinrey trolls Navier by talking about his brother. Navier trolls Heinrey by talking about Duke Kaufman

Ch 39: "What are my chances of marrying her?" So taking her away from the Eastern Empire wasn't actually part of the plan, he just wanted to seduce her to contribute to destabilizing the throne? But then actually fell in love. Well. It's clear in Ch 19 that seducing Navier is not part of any plan that Mckenna knows of, therefore not part of the war strategy, so it's just Heinrey doing what he wants.

This is the only manhwa I've ever read. I don't think I've ever read a manga either, unless you count like, Megatokyo. I stopped reading that when Miho was like, "Don't you get it? We're Magical Girls." Ugh, not my thing. And I loved Miho. It was upsetting that she was so lame after the other writer left the comic.

Anyway. I'm not familiar with the genre and tropes and style, is what I'm saying. I honestly have never liked romance before either. But I think I'm warming up to the slow burn type.

Ch 10: Later, his desperation to hold Navier's hand is made very obvious, but he actually acts that way from the start

Ch 11: In contrast, Sovieshu is eager to drop Navier's hand as quickly as possible

Ch 11: The absolute balls to defy protocol and ask Navier for the first dance. What a flex against Sovieshu

Ch 12: Heinrey rejects Rashta again! He don't dance with trash

Ch 13: "Sure, we can duel, but I'll probably kill you."

Ch 14: He wants Navier to domme him 😂

Ch 15: "I'm so lonely and you won't admit that we're friends Q_Q" Yes, he is manipulative, which is what Mckenna means by "fighting from the shadows" or however he phrased it
