Loona usually recoiled at any hint of affection, only returning it when she thought he didn’t notice. This - a simple hug - made his vision go blurry. He cleared his throat and patted her back awkwardly.

“Thanks for coming, Spock. I’m a doctor, not a gardener”, he gruffly told the Vulcan as he went through the documented symptoms of his four patients once again. It was clearly an allergic reaction and although Leonard had treated them and they were all back to work, he’d told the captain in no uncertain terms that shore leave was on hold until he had determined exactly what of the planet’s flora had caused two thirds of the landing party an allergic shock.

The fact that he’d been part of the landing party wasn’t the primary reason he’d asked Spock to revisit sickbay after hours. Nor even the fact that he’d been unaffected. No, if he had to be honest with himself, he was well and truly stuck. Having reread the reports several times, as well as the tricorder readings, there were too many variables to see a pattern yet. 

And Spock, pain in the ass though he was, was also the most brilliant man he knew. Though he’d be six feet under before admitting it.
