How To Cool Someone Down Fast
Hi Folks. Have you heard about heatstroke? It's summer. And there're heat waves. And heatstroke is a Call-[Emergency Number]-Now type emergency.
Heatstroke is when the body's normal heat-regulating measures have failed under intense environmental heat stress. Core body temperature can rise up to 6 degrees F (3 degrees C) in as little as 10-15 minutes. And a sustained temperature of 105F (40.5C) or higher can cause severe neurological damage.
It looks like:
Confusion, altered mental status, slurred speech
Loss of consciousness (coma)
Hot, dry skin or profuse sweating
Seizures
Very high body temperature (greater than 104F (40.C))
The only way to limit the damage is to cool the person down. So once you've called that emergency number, you're gonna want to act fast.
Fortunately, the state of the art of cooling is very low tech. The following can cool a person by 0.16F (0.09C) per minute. And that's better than just about anything except ECMO. It's probably what they're going to do in the emergency department.
Get some water. Doesn't have to be ice water. Just regular water will do. Make sure the person is wearing clothes or you have to put a sheet over them. Drench their clothes or the sheet in the water. Point a fan at them and set it to it's highest setting. If you don't have a fan, get a piece of cardboard or a newspaper or something and fan them.
That's it. That's going to get the person down a degree or so by the time EMS shows up, which might save some very valuable brain.
Heatwave Snacks to Save Your Ass
I've seen a lot of people from warm climates telling people to hydrate and that is important but I want to add that if you are very hot, you also have to consume more electrolytes!
That's sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, and chloride and I'm not kidding when I say they can be the difference between being uncomfortably hot and experiencing heatstroke. One time, I was revived from heatstroke that almost sent me to the hospital by one (1) salt & vinegar Pringle and one (1) bottle of water.
Some good snack options:
Potato crisps/chips (sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium)
Corn crisps/chips or salted popcorn (sodium, chloride, phosphorous, magnesium)
Pickles/pickled foods/sauerkraut (sodium, chloride, potassium, phosphorous, calcium)
Hard cheeses like cheddar and parmesan (sodium, chloride, calcium, phosphorous)
Almonds/peanuts/hazelnuts (magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorous, + sodium chloride if they're salted)
Bananas (potassium, phosphorous, magnesium)
Yogurt (calcium, sodium, chloride, magnesium
If you need something quick and easy, table salt is sodium chloride; I've just added salt to water before on hot days and made it through. There are also electrolyte powders and sport drinks but with a heatwave like this, it might be easier to find the above on store shelves.
Be safe! Keep cool! Don't die!
With the UK set to have a ridiculous heatwave the next week, with Amber and Red health warnings, keep an eye out for the signs of heatstroke in those around you. If in doubt, call 999.
Also be aware of the medications that reduce heat tolerance - if you have started taking any of these since last summer you may find that you struggle more this time around.
Keep your electrolytes balanced - itβs more than just water and avoid unnecessary activity during the middle of the day - The Spanish have siestas for a reason!
How I should have known I was starting to get delirious.

Whumptober day 17
prompt: disorientation
"Excuse me d-do you know where the nearest.. nearest train station is..?" Caretaker is suddenly taken aback by the withered body in front of them, hunched slightly with concerningly pale skin and deep set eyes. "I'm.. afraid I don't. Are you okay, though?" Caretaker asks almost apprehensively. They don't know this person, but something about the way they're stumbling about in the heat just seems dangerous. Whether that is dangerous to others or themself, Caretaker doesn't know.
