Herbie Hancock & The Headhunters - Music Hall, Omaha, Nebraska, November 17, 1975
Let's hear it for Herbie! Just about 50 years ago, Hancock and the Headhunters were touring behind the classic Man-Child, which would turn out to be their last LP together. The end of a very funky era — an era that had taken Herbie from the outer edges of the avant-fusion scene to the dead-center of the jazz-rock mainstream.
On an excellent FM broadcast from Omaha, NE, he's in full freedom flight, playing a bank of state-of-the-art keys and synths with drummer Michael Clarke, bassist Paul Jackson, guitarist Blackbyrd McKnight, percussionist Bill Summers and reedsman Bennie Maupin shadowing his every move. Hang up your hang ups for an hour and get into it.
Herbie Says: See, before I was concentrating on the music and trying to say, "Well, how can I make this music in such a way that people could get into it?" I was putting the music on the pedestal, and then trying to figure out a way that people could get into it. I was making that the thing. And I changed my whole idea, making the people the thing first and figuring out what music is going to do them the best and then start the music from there. That makes a big difference. That way you start it from the bottom. You're starting from the basis of the importance of anything. When you talk about music, you're talking about values anyway.
