Hi anon! Thank you for your lovely question, I love getting asks!!! And I absolutely don't mind at all!! I'm not too sure how to answer, but I'll do my best! Hope this helps!

To me, Iceman is a very nuanced and complex character, with more depth then deeper you look under then surface, kind of like and iceberg (hehe, sorry, pun unintended!).

I write Iceman largely with an unreliable narrator tone when writing from a 3rd perspective or another person's perspective. He conceals alot of his more controversial opinions, including his identity as a homosexual man serving in the military (thank you Val Kilmer!). This environment and the need for secrecy creates a deeper need for control and a primal fear of being discovered.

I imagine this also leads to some imposter syndrome development later in life, particularly when he reaches higher ranks.

Overall, I think Iceman is a very warm and caring man that has to protect himself with tough, cold armour and holds himself at a higher standard. And I try to bring that through in my writing of him, especially from his own pov. Only Ice knows what actually going on on his head and his reasons for his actions. I find unreliable narrator fics brilliant for this reason.

There's potential for misunderstanding but he's just largely a genuinely good personality that wants the best for the people around him,but he's also flawed and has serious ambition to reach his goals, such as his drive to get the Top Gun trophy.

On the flip side, he also was the only one to sympathise with Maverick on his loss and not try to push him for more than he could do. Despite their rivalry and generally antagonistic relationship, he cares deeply about Mav and just wanted to make sure he was okay. He tried, which was more than what alot of other people who knew Mav did.

Ice can look stoic and unbothered all the while internally cooing over how cute the kitten playing across the room with a string of yarn is. The duality of this man is phenomenal and I love it!

For a few small headcannons I have for him:

He's a bit like a hedgehog I guess.

And I have a real love of writing him with a weakness for cute and comfortable things, like cats and big wooly jumpers. Alot of its in the smaller details, like how he runs cold alot of the time and loves bundling up in soft clothes, and wrapping himself up in the big blanket his babushka knitted for him.

He prefers tea over coffee, although he does drink coffee when he's on deployment to wake up quickly.

He doesn't really like dogs cause of an incident with an aggressive dog in his childhood but he loves cats and adores kittens.

And of course, I love writing icemav being soft! He has the biggest weakness for his menaces puppy eyes and his favourite thing to do in the world is to curl up with his beloved Mav with a book in hand,a cup of steming tea on the side and his babushkas blanket over them both, Mav asleep and relaxed into his side.
