My List of the Best HDTGM Episodes
I threatened to do a HDTGM ranking earlier. I had trouble deciding to cut ones in favor of others. Do you agree with the below? Leave a comment with your faves. Fight me!
Since it started 15 years ago in December 2010, How Did This Get Made? has been one of my favorite podcasts. You might think they couldn't find enough bad movies to talk about, but you'd be wrong. They are everywhere.
To celebrate this milestone, I have made a list of some of my favorite episodes of HDTGM! with Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael and Jason Mantzouks. I have linked to the episodes, if available. (ProTip: Things go behind the paywall on Earwolf app but the Official YouTube Channel keeps them up for longer.)
First of all, eleven years ago, animator Jay Marks made videos of the best moments of the early days of the podcast. You can watch them here. It's a pretty good introduction to our heroes.
1. Episode #219. Drop Dead Fred. I'm not sure this is the funniest episode, but it's a big one. It's like Captain America: Civil War but instead of Cap vs Tony is Scheer and guest Casey Wilson against June and Zouks on whether this is a good movie or not. Are you Team Sanity or Team Fred?
2. #186. Geostorm. GEOSTORM!!!!! Find out why people randomly shout this at Jason (including June and Paul). With Colton Dunn and Jessica St. Clair.
3. #132. Bloodsport. Kumite! Kumite! Jason and guest Nicole Byer think JCVD is hot. Splitsguy does the splits (which is somehow thrilling in audio); you just gotta hear it.
4. #171. Miami Connection. It's June's kind of ninja movie. With Chris Gere. And don't forget to watch Avaryl's brilliant video edit. RIP, Queen.
5. #107. Lake Placid with Nate Corddry and Paul F. Tompkins. The internet tried to tell Paul this was a good movie but the panel does NOT agree. I identified by Tompkins' rant about yellow legal paper, Dad. (See alos: Deep Blue Sea, if you can find it.)
6. #140. Mannequin Two: On the Movie. With Steve Agee. Where DOES the butt start? The investigation is ongoing.
7. #109. Face/Off. With Randall Park. Jason didn't want to do this movie because it's great. Learn about face waterfalls. (Listen with its companion episode, Con Air)
8. #162. My Step-Mother is an Alien. With Whitney Cummings. Is this the work of some YouTube tricksters? Tim? Origin of "Put her in a bra."
9. #204. Holiday in Handcuffs. It's the Mario Lopez-Cast. One of the best holiday-themed episodes with frequent guest, Jessica St. Clair.
10. #68. Over the Top. With Bobby Moynihan. Is this kid's name really Mike Hawk?
11. 183. Ladybugs. Kids, get the car it's time for the Rodney Dangerfeld kids' movie that could have been made by David Lynch. With Patton Oswalt.
12. #200. Action Jackson. Seth Rogen joins the gang to discuss this Carl Weathers film. June sees something in the background that disturbs her. What's a man-woman scene? Another great second opinions song Les Mis-style.
13. #189. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Joe Mande and Tawny Newsome join Paul and Zouks to discuss this CGI nightmare. Also, is Wikifeet racist?
14. #130. Teen Witch with June sister, Deanna Cheng. The episode everyone was clamoring for. Top that!
15. #80. Jack Frost. With Dan Harmon. There's a second opinion in here that will change you for life.
16. #215. The Country Bears. Paul loves rides and Disney, everyone else is greatly disturbed my these bears and their dead eyes. Do YOU want your tax dollars going to comedy mustaches? With Kulap Vilaysack.
17. #236. The Great Wall. Would you be surprised to know there are aliens in this White Saviour movie? One of my fave second opinions songs to a Lion King tune.
18. #209. The Snowman. This guy's name is Harry Hole and it never gets old. Fuck you, Norway. With Bryan Safi and Erin Gibson.
19. #70. Gymkata. With Michael Showalter. It's gymnastics except people put faces where his feet are.
19.5 #160. The Lake House. This one is sadly not available without paying, so I went with Gymkata instead. But if you have the money, figure out this time travel for us.
20. #134. Can't Stop the Music. Divisive pick on my part. According to some listeners, there is too much shouting in this episode. But how can you not get excited about the Village People in a movie? Featuring Cameron Esposito and Pete Holmes (TW: misgendering/deadnaming).
And, of course, I couldn't talk about HDTGM without mentioning their series of episodes on the Fast and the Furious series, usually featuring noted Vin Diesel expert, Adam Scott.
The Fast and the Furious (with Seth Rogen)
Fast Five (with Adam Scott)
Fast & Furious 6 (with Adam Scott)
Fast 7 (with Adam Scott)
The Fate of the Furious (with Adam Scott)
F9 (with Adam Scott)
Fast X (with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg)
Hobbs and Shaw (with Adam Scott and Nicole Byer)
But my fave is xXx: The Return of Xander Cage (with Adam Scott)
Jason Mantzoukas recommended The Apothecary Diaries in the new HDTGM episode. This is amazing my two current obsessions are colliding I'm losing my mind right now. He also likes Frieren, he has great taste cuz he likes the things I like and I know for a fact that I have great taste
