What if the HDP (Human-derived Protein) isn’t just what is “feeding” The Hive but also what keeps them intact in a human body and connected as a Hivemind.

Because you do see them eat and drink human/animal food and drink all the time. They just can’t produce it for themselves due to their claimed pacifist and vegan ethics. They can eat and drink anything so long as it is provided for them by their non-infected human allies. So they do eat and drink more than HDP. It probably just doesn’t sustain them enough in their human hosts. Which would mean they need HDP for other reasons. I bet you these other reasons are what are keeping them surviving for longer than they’re really supposed to and Manousos will be the one to figure this out when Carol finally tells him that they eat and drink this HDP more than they eat and drink anything else because they can produce and provide that for themselves. He’ll be able to work out why they actually need this HDP so much because it will disturb him beyond belief that they eat dead human bodies and it will be the first thing he’ll want to stop them from doing in finding a way to defeat them and save the world. And Carol will likely just follow along with him conflicted to all hell about it because of of her attachment to Zosia but will eventually agree that that is what needs to be done if they want to put things back to the way they were before The Joining and save as many still alive humans as possible. Because they’re not gone. That was proven in the finale episode when Manousos was trying to get through to “Rick” via the radio waves. Yeah, he never turned him back but he was able to interfere with whatever The Hive was doing to keep him one of them. So there most definitely is a way to reverse the process and I think HDP will come into it.

They haven’t really said much about HDP besides the fact it is what they primarily eat/drink and I think that it’s intentional because they can’t lie. Only omit truth.

First of all... Rhea Seehorn unwanted pregnancy plot thread. Please, Vince! Please please please! I'm just a little guy and I need my little treats! I need Carol fat and somehow even grumpier. I need the hive passive aggressively relishing on taking away that part of her independence too.

... But in all likelihood if they need embryonic stem cells, they are going to impregnate Zosia instead. Being hived, Zosia would "consent" to this, and it also makes sense as a gross little twist explaining why she's been absent the previous two episodes: she was getting IVF. It also snaps what KIND of toxic yuri we're dealing with here into sharp focus.

If that happens, where I predict/hope this is going is that the situation with Zosia will shake loose emotions about Helen Carol was already feeling: MAYBE Carol wanted children, MAYBE she wanted to do a better job than her own mom did. But I can't help but speculate that Carol was reluctant to make that commitment and this was more something Helen wanted. The plan was was that they'd use Carol and a donor's DNA, and Helen would carry it, that way it would feel like it was a piece of both of them. Plus that way Carol wouldn't have to stop touring. But even though they were already over 35, Carol kept dragging her feet, so they sat frozen in the bank for almost 20 years. She loved Helen, and she knew how badly Helen wanted this, but the truth was Carol didn't; she couldn't find it in herself to feel like a mother. And the retrieval process alone was tumultuous enough.

And now the hive has committed the ultimate obscenity. Not only have they shoved this new love interest at Carol before Helen is barely cold in the ground, not only are they claiming they can assuage Carol's grief by using Helen's memories to pretend she's still in there. But now they've made a grotesque parody of the sorest spot of their relationship. Helen's dream realized except Helen is gone! And because Carol never told the truth, the hive gets to say that based on Helen's memories, they thought she would LIKE this (even if they probably know it's untrue). I predict this will all crescendo to a monologue from Carol about how not everything between her and Helen was as perfect as she might want to remember; they didn't tell each other things to avoid hurting each other and now she really wishes they had when they had the chance. I'm picturing something similar to the "life terrifies me" monologue from the ending of "Pearl".

Obviously, this has massive implications for the Abettran AU. The precious omnigen can only be extracted from the anguish of women, specifically during the labor process. Rita came here with one goal in mind: to get that omnigen from Carol because she knew the distress would be exquisite. When Rita learned about the frozen eggs, she was thrilled that her job had just been made that much easier, but Rita has had difficulties puppetting the hive to carry out her agenda, and from the beginning Rita feared the hive was going to do something STUPID and do anything other than put them back in Carol's womb. Rita worked so hard to sell her overlords on the idea that she could get Carol's omnigen, and if she has to turn around and convince them that this random smiley bitch is "just as good" a host? Well Rita will make lemonade from lemons if she has to, but she'll probably throw a few of the zombies off a building just to vent her frustrations. Even if it doesn't actually punish their collective insolence.

If handled properly, a monologue from Carol could actually weaken Rita or even possibly drive a stake through the witch's heart once and for all. The whole point of my original "Sheepdog" fanfic was to explore the unspoken dynamic where Jimmy wanted a family and Kim was reluctant, and how even though Jimmy was being doting and supportive, the way he begged her to keep it felt a little pressuring and suffocating. It took years of visiting nightmares onto Kim, but Rita had wheedled her way into convincing Kim that she wanted to have Iris. But the fate of that child is still in superposition, and now it's been entangled with Carol's story. If Carol gives a soliloquy about not wanting a child, and it feels like something which could have applied to Kim as well, the incubi's curse might finally be broken. I might finally have to give up on Iris.
