Hi. Sorry if I’m being rude or dumb but what is homecoming and GHOE? Is it an American thing? Is it a cultural thing?

Hi hi 👋🏾 dear anon. You’re not being rude or dumb at all.
🤔🤔As far as I know homecoming in the sense I’m referring to is an U.S.A. thing. Homecoming for schools, mostly schools with football teams, is when the team has played so many away games and now they’re coming back “home” to play a game.
Homecoming isn’t a cultural thing but how it’s celebrated can be. I’m not sure how festive PWIs (Predominantly White Institutions) are for their homecomings but HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) definitely get festive. 🎉🎊🎉🎊
GHOE stands for Greatest Homecoming On Earth. That is what we call the homecoming of my alma mater, North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University (NC A&T SU). It’s a week of events usually held the last week of October for my school. It’s from Monday to Sunday. There’s a step show, fashion show, coronation, seminars, meet & greets, day parties, night parties, a parade, the game and concerts. For HBCUs it is a major event for students and alumnus alike. It’s a perfect time to catch up with old friends, see the changes your school has made, and to just have a lot of damn fun.
I’m not sure of your cultural background but if you’re ever on the black/african American side of social media you may see all of #HOMECOMING, #ILoveMyHBCU, #HBCU, and #GHOE around this time of year.
Here’s Brian Tyree Henry & Ken Joeng discussing it. 🤗🤗https://youtu.be/vXsQyP8-Azc?si=-9WXgn4nx-k3tbaY
