Tudjátok, Portugália valahogy olyan, mint a drog. Soha nem enged el. Addikció. Beleszippantasz a levegőjébe, és nincs menekvés. Lehet, hogy tudnál máshol is élni, de minek? Aki csak egy hétre is, de "megkóstolta" ezt az országot, az örökre a hatása alatt marad. Olyan drog, ami nem árt, sőt meggyógyít. Ha megismerted, nem tudsz nélküle élni. Vannak gazdagabb országok, ahol jólét van. Itt a jól-lét béleli ki a mindennapjaidat.

Mindig ámulni fogok az óceánon. Amikor a partján állok, valami hihetetlen nyugalom fog el. Tudom, hogy évmilliók óta itt van, és az én rövid életem nem több, mint egy homokszem a tengerparton. Lehet, hogy azok is így csodálkoznak rá, akik itt születtek?

Ma hat éve, hogy repülőre szálltunk, hogy lakást keressünk Lisszabonban. Mondhatni, hogy a semmibe ugrottunk, hiszen én ezt megelőzően majdnem harminc évvel jártam Portugáliában életemben először, és egyben utoljára (bár már akkor is úgy mentem el innen, hogy itt akarok megöregedni) - a szerelmem, akinek köszönhetem, hogy Lisszabonban élhetünk, életében először lépett erre a földre. Több mint 20.000 képet készítettem a városban, de (rám egyáltalán nem jellemző mértéktartással) ennek csak töredékét tettem ki. Ezek talán elárulnak valamit Lisszabon utánozhatatlan hangulatáról, bár nálam jóval tehetségesebb fotós kéne hozzá, hogy valóban meg tudja mutatni, milyen fantasztikus ez a hely. Amiről azonban egyetlen kép sem tud mesélni, az az, hogy milyen csodálatosak a portugál emberek. Ezt valóban csak köztük élve lehet megtapasztalni.

Szokták kérdezni tőlem, nincs-e honvágyam. De van: akkor érzem ezt, amikor Magyarországra utazunk. Már az első naptól kezdve.

Portugal é um pouco como as drogas. Nunca o deixa ir. Vício. Respira-se o seu ar e não há fuga possível. Talvez pudesse viver noutro lugar, mas porquê? Qualquer pessoa que tenha "provado" este país, mesmo durante uma semana, estará sob a sua influência para sempre. É uma droga que não faz mal, na verdade cura. Uma vez conhecido, não se pode viver sem ele.

Há países mais ricos onde há prosperidade. Em Portugal, o bem-estar é o material da sua vida quotidiana. Ficarei sempre surpreendido com o oceano. Quando estou em terra, sinto uma calma incrível. Sei que está aqui há milhões de anos e a minha curta vida não é mais do que um grão de areia na praia. Talvez seja assim que aqueles que nasceram aqui se perguntam sobre isso? Possuir um pedaço de espaço e de tempo que por acaso se tenha enfiado um no outro aqui e agora dentro de si é a própria graça. Penso que sou infinitamente afortunado por ter feito parte dela. Faz hoje seis anos que embarcamos num avião para procurar um apartamento em Lisboa. Já passaram quase trinta anos desde que visitei Portugal pela primeira e última vez na minha vida (apesar de ter saído daqui com a intenção de envelhecer) - o meu amor, que é a razão pela qual vivemos em Lisboa, pisou esta terra pela primeira vez na sua vida. Tirei mais de 20.000 fotografias da cidade, mas (com a minha moderação incaracterística) só afixei uma fracção disso. Talvez lhe digam algo sobre a atmosfera inimitável de Lisboa, embora fosse preciso um fotógrafo muito mais talentoso do que eu para mostrar como o lugar é fantástico. Mas o que nenhuma das imagens lhe pode dizer é como o povo português é maravilhoso. Só se pode realmente experimentar isto vivendo entre eles.

Perguntam-me frequentemente se não estou com saudades de casa. Mas eu sinto: sinto-o quando viajamos para a Hungria. Desde o primeiro dia.
