Like Shallan, Jasnah wore the havah, a Vorin dress of distinctive design. The hemline was down at her feet and the neckline was almost at her chin. Some of the Thaylens--when they thought she wasn't listening--referred to the clothing as prudish. Shallan disagreed; the havah wasn't prudish, but elegant. Indeed, the silk hugged the body, particularly through the bust--and the way the sailors gawked at Jasnah indicated they didn't find the garment unflattering.
Jasnah was pretty. Lush of figure, tan of skin. Immaculate eyebrows, lips painted a deep red, hair up in a fine braid. Though Jasnah was twice Shallan's age, her mature beauty was something to be admired, even envied. Why did the woman have to be so perfect?

I know this is a tad nitpicky but I wish fan artists stop drawing havahs that look so European. We know the inspo is cheongsam, for goodness sake. We have a semi canonical sketch of it and it's not lowkey Victorian neck to toe dress with big left hand sleeve.
oh this is a great point! i hadnât even considered how whitewashing would show up in fashion design. but yeah i definitely agree with you, it would be great to see art that better reflected the original inspiration. for anyone reading, hereâs the description of the havah as being inspired by the cheongsam (x).Â
itâs described as having the same cut and form as a cheongsam, except with the addition of the safehand sleeve. the outer skirt is slit like the cheongsam, but extends much lower. there are also very fine underskirt layers which have accordion folds, so the skirt drops off at the hip (so itâs not a full or flared skirt), but extends for freedom of movement.
also, adding onto this (read: lowkey derailing your ask), it would be cool to see some of the other countries on roshar (jah keved, thaylenah, azir, iri, emuli, herdaz) also have inspiration from non-european cultures. iâm thinking you could draw inspiration from mongolian fashion for thaylenah, which is known to have cold temperatures. maybe moroccan fashion for azir and other northwest african fashions for the rest of the makabaki kingdoms? iâd suspect herdaz has fashion inspired by colombian or mexican fashion, since sanderson has said thatâs the inspiration for the country. and because iâm biased, iâm deciding that the entirety of tu bayla has indian fashion <3.
My face is already plaguing the internet (by which I mean there are two photos and two drawings of it on my blog already. blech) so at this point I may as well. This is my Halloween costume! Shallan Davar (youâll have to forgive me for being white. Iâm sorry; I donât have epicanthic folds, which are beautiful by the way, Iâm just doing what I can and the rest is my genesâ fault :/ ) I had fun making the havah and wearing it is such a beautiful nerdy moment for me. (Also, ha I stole some boots from my sister - by which I mean I asked and she said to keep them because she doesnât wear heels. but still. BOOTS.)
