Hattie McDaniel made history as the first Black performer to win an Academy Award. She won Best Supporting Actress for GONE WITH THE WIND at the 12th Oscars on February 29, 1940. #Oscars Also pictured with Fay Bainter.

Hattie McDaniel made history as the first African American to win an Academy Award for her role in Gone With the Wind. She also broke barriers by being the first black woman to sing on the radio in America. Beyond her acting and singing, McDaniel was a talented performer in minstrel shows and vaudeville, even working as a bathroom attendant at a club during the Great Depression.Â
