Individual Differences Make Us Beautifully Unique
Mocked and bullied, individual differences bring us social catastrophes. Others just can’t seem to see the beauty in the rarity of some things. Just because a unique feature doesn’t go with the trend, others are quick to judge and destroy it. This culture has been passed down from generation to generations.
This hate culture has forced our individual differences into hiding. We become less of ourselves. And, all for what? To earn praises for who we are not?
This culture of hatred creates a chasm that crushes individuals who fail to live up to the social trends.
Promoting Individual Differences
It takes a beautiful mind to comprehend the oddities and the uniqueness of individual differences. Just because something is different from the trend, it doesn’t mean it’s less beautiful. Sometimes we compromise our beauty for others not to destroy it. Ironically, we dim our beauty’s light to live up to the society’s beauty standards. Even more so, some people reduce the ability of others to perform because of their disabilities.
In my book, The Tale of the Perfect Whitetails, I highlighted how prevalent this issue is:
“Midgey, we were embarrassed to be seen with you because you are handicapped. Yet you took the biggest chance of all by tempting the coyote and tricking him by letting him think that you would be easy to catch.
“We thought that we were too good for you. You are more perfect than us because you came to our rescue even though we made fun of you. How can we ever thank you?”
Individual differences, physical or not, is not a worthy of subject for mockery and disdain. Despite Midgey’s disability, she had the heart to save those who reduced her beauty and ability to her condition. She didn’t allow her disability to set her limits, for no one can simply dim the light of a heart that shines the brightest. In this instance, individual differences are projected through the physicality of a subject.
Our differences are never subjects for contempt, unless these individual differences promote ill will. There is no need for us to conform to the standards of social fads. As long as we have something good to contribute with our individual differences, then it’s about time we expose them fully.
A Children’s Book’s Moral
The target of my book is young readers. However, the moral of the story critically hits the gut of an adult’s way of thinking. There is no denying how this culture of hate still dominates the present. This children’s book aims to eradicate this culture of hatred. Thus, we start to acknowledge people beyond the qualities that do not live up to our society’s flawed standards.
People radiate a spectrum of humane qualities. We must learn to appreciate all the goodness of our individual differences. As long as these differences do not violate the basic human principles, then we must learn to acknowledge them rather than mar them.
Our uniqueness makes us what we are. Shutting it out to please the world means wasting the beautiful uniqueness that is ourselves.
