Standard-winged Nightjar (Caprimulgus longipennis)
BIRB! I love how pictures of Standard-winged nightjars come with the subject either half asleep or "WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY HOUSE" haha! The breeding males aren't very standard in their wings though, so I don't know why that's their common name. Once per breeding season, many of the males grow one feather on each wing that is longer than their body. I think this only happen in roughly 5 out of the 39 species within the genus. Also, "longipennis" actually means "Long wings" so I REALLY don't know why they called it "standard" in English! Why are they called that!?

Corythoraptor
Corythoraptor jacobsi
Back to the non-avian dinosaurs! Although, it seems ratites like cassowaries & ostriches may have stolen this guy's homework? Hmmm! This father is defending his chick from another Corythoraptor, who was just minding their buisness. Big macho man of a dad.

Elegant Crested Tinamou Eudromia elegans
Wah, not as happy with this one. Brain kinda melted today. Cute lil guys! They're ratites, so more Emu, Ostrich, Rhea or Cassowary than quail or partridge. Tinamous have basal characteristics of the ratite common ancestor, & indeed is the only ratite capable of (limited) powered flight. Strange that they radiated out from flying ancestors that all decided to stick to the ground, mostly independently. The only ones that are particularly close are the Emu & Cassowary ( to my knowledge, I could be wrong).

Day 76, Marchosauria: Rinconsaurus caudamirus
Decided to try this late into the day, so I didn't do too much research on Rinconsaurus before starting. I wish I did, the Bajo de la Carpa Formation has SUCH a richly preserved biota. Deserving of much more than generic canyon walls! The one time I remember to draw conifers, it's for a mesozoic ecosystem that had freaking grasses and palm trees! I tried to add in some of the earliest flightless bird (that we know of), Patagopteryx deferrariisi.

Parasaurolophus Parasaurolophus walkeri
Wah, dino week complete! It's been a while since I did an art challenge & I really enjoyed it! We're ending with a very iconic dinosaur that is very marvellous, parasaurolophus, who can sing a lovely chorus that I'm sure made many birds jealous. I'll stop before I bore us. But yeag, last I heard, we actually have a pretty good idea how this iconic animal sounded! Very trumpet-ey. I can't help but think of Dinosaur King â„¢ with this dinosaur, too.
I'll do more 2026drawdinodaily prompts that come up when I can. Looking forward to Hoatzin, Butcher bird, Kentrosaurus & Kakapo! See you then!
You're begging and praying for Superman and the Gang shows up, wyd?
'I'iwi Drepanis coccinea
2026DrawDinoDaily, Day 79, Marchosauria, 19/03/2026, What's an hour and a half overtime of the daily challenge? So it turns out the 'I'iwi probably shares its name with two other, similar curved beaked birds. There's the Kivi (Numenius tahitiensis) [Bristle Thighed Curlew] & the much more famous Kiwi (Apteryx spp.) [ spp. is an abbreviation for multiple species). I think Oricorio from Pokémon is also based in it? The Kivi isn't on this year's DrawDinosDaily list, but the Kiwi is in Bonevember. I wanted to include the Kivi now, in case I don't draw for the Kiwi's day in November.
