Gutted it's the final season but loved every minute of it and can't wait for the last one to come out. Been a long time Harry Bosch/Michael Connelly fan and seeing Titus Welliver bring this iconic character to life has been amazing. Desert Star by Michael Connelly is the latest book in his Ballard & Bosch series. “Renee Ballard has taken over the Open/Unsolved unit. Bosch agrees to work with her as long as he can work on on old case - one where a family was killed and buried in the desert. Bosch finds a break in another case with an unusual source of DNA. And discovers a serial killer that’s been killing for years.” Like all Connelly books, this is a stand-alone so you don’t need to have read any of the previous books. This is a police procedural but Connelly finds ways to make it interesting and new. He does include a genealogy expert which seems to be a big thing for cold cases now. There is great chemistry between Ballard and Bosch. I like that MC has allowed Bosch to age over the years. And I hope he’s not retiring him for good especially with the revelations in this book. Connelly gets my vote for best killer name - “Finbar McShane” Do you have a better one? An old karaoke place. Used to let you go after hours. Didn’t frequent it much, but liked it. Burned out. Don’t know if it went out of business before that, or the fire caused the closure. Sat for a while. Doing nothing. Serving nobody. Who knows what’ll be put in its place. Another target? Luxury condos with a BCBGMAXAZRIA on the ground floor? There’s a hot chicken place two doors down so that’s unlikely. Maybe somebody will get finally get their dream business off the ground and find a niche and make their dent in Los Angeles. Maybe they struggle for six months before finding a lock on the door, turning their palms up to the sky and saying “at least we gave it a shot” before looking at a fog of financial ruin that will hang over their lives, and their children’s lives. I wish I had gotten to this place with my 35mm. I kept putting it off, waiting for a new lens to come in. They had put off tearing it down so I felt I could put it off. Oh well. Also wish their was a level on the default camera app. And every other camera I touch.
