In honor of Friday, gimme a line several paragraphs from your latest WIP or project that involves hands. (Search-find hand, hands, fingers, fingerpad, nails, wrist, palm, thumb, heel, lifelines etc)
Tagged by @ihni, who has excellent timing. Using this as excuse to post preview of long delayed next chapter of Only One Bed:
The Catholic church on the edge of town rang its bells thrice a dayâsix in the AM, noon, six in the PMâand that first round of distant, steady clanging roused Billy from fitful sleep, however briefly, every morning without fail. He was used to it, even before moving to Hawkins; the Lutherans liked to do the same at his childhood church in San Diego.
That morning, he wouldâve drifted off againâclosing shift laterâif not for a couple distracting factors. Number one, he had to piss, and usually heâd just roll out and stumble back without a thought because Ed slept like the dead once he was down, except that, number two, cuddled along Eddieâs side, his arm looped limp around her back, was⊠Chrissy. Whoâd shifted, eyes fluttering, the moment Billy sat up.Â
Her enquiring hum was more a soft grunt.
âSorry,â he whispered, barely audible over the hiss of the sheets as he slid free. âGotta pee.â
Another hum, faintly acceding, like Iâll allow it, and Billy bit down on a bubble of mirth, spent his time before the porcelain throne and his foggy wander back to the bed a bit dumbfounded, awestruck in a way that made his chest tight, this balloon inside expanding past capacity.
It was Sunday. This time last week, heâd been bracing to lose something, not⊠find something. Gain something.Â
Heâd assumed pushing Chrissy and Eddie together would necessarily push Billy and Eddie apart. Billy would be the one giving, not⊠getting.Â
Never in his wildest imagining had Billy anticipated last night. That, holding Eddie out to her, poised for release, Chrissy would grab onto them both. Together, but alsoâseparately.Â
And Billy never expected heâd so badly want to grab onto her in return.
Quiet as he could, he slipped between the sheets, sat propped against the headboard, and seeing them snuggled in the dark set off that same buoyant burst as before. Not just for Eddie. The pang of possessive fondness⊠it was for her, too.Â
Possessive and protective. Chrissy had fallen apart, let him tend to the pieces, bundle her up safe, and it was almost desperate, irrational, how much he wanted to be there when she needed that, but alsoâŠ
He swallowed, rubbing his chest like that would calm whatever was wrestling for purchase, and tried to parse the chaos, the known and familiar feelings from the rest.
Because the past week had stomped all over the sandy bottom of his psyche, stirred what he tried so hard to keep submerged until it was nothing but swirling murk. And when it got like that, the best thing to do was keep real still, wait for it to settle.
Slight movement beneath a pillow, and his gaze cut to the slender hand as it emerged to nudge his own, resting on the mattress by his hip. Chrissy gave no other sign of being awake, and maybe she wasnât, maybe she was just stretching in her sleep⊠but when he turned his hand, lightly held her fingers, brushing his thumb over soft knuckles, she squeezed, a brief pulse, weak from lying lax so long.
It lanced through him, this urge to scoop her up and really squeeze, so tight and consuming that it smothered everything bad.
Clingy, he diagnosed. He, Billy Hargrove, was feeling fucking clingy.

summer retrospective time because i'm feeling down about term starting up and not writing as much as i wanted to but I KNOW this is ridiculous and my goals were unreasonable.
so totally unasked for and unprompted here's what i got:
Chapters 8 and 9 of Upside-Down - 32k (total wip 118k) - E - Harringrove - Crazy long March chapter wherein an ominous phone rings and rings, Billy experiences some firsts (first time playing D&D against his will! first time fucking Steve! first time enduring a birthday party!), and Eddie drags Billy to a thrash metal concert. In Flayedville, the kids rally the troops to save Billy, he and Steve share body heat, and plans don't go as planned.
Two fics written for upcoming @strangerthingscharityzine totaling 4k words in their original state, trimmed down to 1.5k words each for the zine edition. Idk if I'm allowed to summarize but one of them made Remy cry!
That Bartender Sure is Something - 1k - G - Harringrove - Sideways scene rewrite from alt character's POV wherein I try to lay groundwork for why Steve's parents are out of town so often (aside from my need to give boys safe space to fuck and be super freaking domestic).
Chapters 11 and 12 of Only One Bed - 13k (total wip 59k) - E - Harringrovesoningham or whatever Steve/Billy/Eddie/Chrissy is called - Chrissy POV and Eddie POV chapters wherein Chrissy and Billy bond and then Billy/Eddie/Chrissy navigate their dynamic as asymmetrical polyamorous triad. Mostly cute!! Minimal angst!!
Drafted aaalmost first half (7k) of @bigbangharringrove fic wherein Steve flirts with necromancy and necrophilia and NO STOP where are you going it's all gonna be fine!!! See, Billy died in this contemporary fantasy version of Hawkins where magic and supernatural creatures are just kinda there and so Steve tries to revive him but he imports the wrong file. The wrong Billy. Because there happens to be a lust demon that goes by the same name as Steve's dearly departed husband and let me tell ya he is NOT jazzed to be here. Working with @LucaDoodleDoo who is awesome AND so far has not run away!
Drafted 1.5k of fic for upcoming @harringrovezine. Still on track to be way too long but I WILL trim it down. Not sure what else I'm free to say but I'm excited how it's shaping up?
what follows is me convincing myself i did a good job
And that's... that's it. About 76.5k in all. Which is more than I realized (and also according to haphazard math is more than last summer by maybe 10k?)
I'm not usually fixated on word count much (aside from like laugh-crying when a fic just balloons way bigger than anticipated), and more words does not equal better words by ANY means, but I think this gives me a reality check about getting down on myself. I didn't finish the major things I originally set out to finish but... yeah, such is life when you have more than one WIP in which you are painfully invested đ
And it's not like I won't EVER finish them which is prob my biggest fear because i had a rep growing up for all my grand plans and projects just losing steam and going nowhere. But I am capable of finishing fics because look ma, there's 3 whole multi-chap fics with the little green check mark (please actually DON'T look, ma).
I'm just babbling now. When work starts I'll be back to writing in random libraries after last bell and my output will slow, and I'm sad about it. But wow you know what I did shit out a bunch of words in like 2.5 months so at least there's that.
(Hesitant to post this because I'm sure it looks like flexing or fishing or something? Or like I'm implying that unless you too are shitting out words you suck? Which uhh I am not! The intent is more for Present Me to flex on Past Me, maybe? And fish some reassurance out of cold hard numbers to more easily put things in perspective.)
Mostly this did work, though! I feel better about the summer. If you need a boost, look over what you've done across a certain span of time using whatever measurement suits you and talk yourself into a pat on the back.

Summary:
After high school, Eddie works at the Hideout. And then moves into the ratty apartment above the bar. And then Billy moves in with him. And then they start hooking up. And then they scheme to set each other up with the person they think the other really wants.
Heather had been making eyes at Billy all week, kept bringing up the fourth of July party at the quarry and trailing off with a hopeful inflection in her voice, but so far heâd been playing dumbâor coy?
He wasnât against hooking up with her, especially since, given her track record, it wouldnât be anything more than that. And Eddie would be manning the bar, likely wouldnât be free till midnight, so⊠yeah, he was leaning toward going, but it was fun letting her work for it.
âCâmon, Billy,â she said, making one last pitch as they headed to the parking lot after their opening shift on Thursday. âEveryone else is going. Stacy and Matt and Jackie⊠even Steve is going, and he needs us, Billyâthisâll be his first party post-breakupââ
âBreak-up?â he repeated, stopping dead in his tracks a split second before the Straight Monitor in his head barked at him to keep moving.
âYou didnât hear?â She widened her eyes, the requisite sympathy undercut by titillation. âNancy dumped him last week. Didnât you wonder why heâs been so glum?â
âNo,â Billy lied.
She giggled. âThen again, heâs always grouchy around you.â
Billyâs willingness to hook up with her dropped by about 30%.
âYeah, wellâfeelingâs mutual,â he muttered.
She shook her head. âDonât you think itâs time to put all the high school drama behind us?â she asked, as though she hadnât been glorying in gossip mere moments ago. âCome to the party andâbury the hatchet or whatever!â
âFine,â he said, rolling his eyes, then clarified, when she squealed and hugged him sideways, hopping in place, âIâll go, I meanânot that Iâll⊠heâs still a dick.â
âOf course,â she said, in the tone of someone humoring a child. âBut youâll come?â
âYeah.â He sighed, gently shrugged her off his arm to dig out his keys. âWant me to pick you up?â
âIâm all set for getting there,â she said, then sidled up to him as he reached for the door, key in hand, and murmured in his ear. âBut Iâd be up for a ride home?â
âGuess weâll see where the night takes us,â he replied, voice low, and smirked when she couldnât quite repress a shiver.
~~~
Eddie wouldâve razzed him big time for how damn long he took primping in front of the mirror the next evening, but lucky for Billy, Eddie was downstairs pouring beer for assorted locals and bikers and local bikers.
He was in the jeans that Eddie referred to as an ass magnetâmeaning both that they were for getting ass and ensuring all eyes were glued to his assâand a white short-sleeved button-down, mostly unbuttoned, tucked in at the waist. Brown belt, brown boots with a slight heel to induce a certain swagger in his step. Nothing earth-shatteringâhis usual getupâbut the white looked nice against his tan.
It was his hair that had been giving him grief, stubbornly refusing to cohere into curls instead of unsightly frizz, until, in a fit of frustration, heâd tied it up in a messy⊠bun⊠thing. And then, angling his chin this way and that in the mirror, struck by the sweeping curve of his neck, his jawâsort of⊠elegant but⊠vulnerable?âheâd pawed through the vanity drawer, fished out the earringâthe one with the metal spike hanging from a row of beadsâand threaded it through his lobe.
Had watched it swing as he shifted his head, riveted awhile.
âHoly shit,â Eddie hollered, when Billy swung by on his way out. His gaze raked him head to toe, nothing short of delighted. âYou should wear a warning, boy!â
And Billy internally paused, tripped up yet again by the vast difference between here and Cherry Lane.
âYou like?â he purred, leaning cross-armed on the bar. The place was busy, but no one was currently vying for service. Eddie wiped his hands on a dishrag and mirrored him.
âBabe, if it wouldnât mess up your pretty outfit, Iâd be taking fifteen and taking you with me.â
âSmooth,â Billy pronounced, awarding credit where credit was due.
âThat was, right?â Eddie hunched, peered around like phantoms lurked nearby. âI donât know how, but when Iâm working the taps, Iâm a total Don Juan.â
Billy hummed, speculative. âIs that why bartenders are so sexy?â
âItâs that tap magic. Bar magic.â
âAnd definitely not the drunkenness.â
Eddieâs whole face lit with divine inspiration, and Billy knew a pun was imminent. âBeauty,â he intoned. âIs in the eye of the beer-holder.â
Billy thunked his head to the wood and groaned.
âHow sexy am I now?â Eddie demanded.
âSignificantly less,â he insisted, muffled, hiding a mile-wide smile, and heard Eddie scoff. Billy straightened, about to shove off toward the exit, when Eddie leaned forward, extending a hand, and Billy stilled.
Fingertips were warm at his sternum. Billy ducked his chin, watched as Eddie gently flipped his pendant so that Mary looked out. Their eyes locked, and Eddie stroked the back of his fingers across the skin below the necklace, conjured goosebumps easy as breathing. He withdrew, cut his gaze to a jowly patron approaching the bar.
âHave fun, man,â Eddie said, grin soft, and Billy nodded, resisted rubbing where Ed had touched, pressing it in.
~~~
The booze was flowing, bonfire high, by the time Billy rolled up to the chaos of cars at Sattlerâs Quarry. Wisely parking at a distance in case he wanted a quick escape, he hoofed it down the dirt road toward the dancing shadows and silhouettes. Springsteen was growl-howling about his country of birth, and not in a complimentary wayâbut Billy guessed most in attendance hadnât listened to the lyrics all that closely.
âThere you are!â cried Heather, waving a beer from her perch atop one of the mismatched picnic tables carted in by enterprising delinquents past. âFinally!â
He dug a beer out of the cooler at her feet, cracked the tab, and knew by about his second pull that he wouldnât be fucking Heather that nightâsheâd clearly been laying in the groundwork with Matt in Billyâs absence, and that was fine by him.
âAny close calls?â he asked the group at large, referring to the cliff, and half-listened to the impassioned recounting of so-and-so almost plummeting to his death.
Half-listened because the other half was straining toward the neighboring cluster of bodies, where Harrington was loud and swaying. Billy had clocked the guyâs whereabouts the second he arrived and hated himself for it. Refused to look his way, even as his ear followed that voice weaving through the air.
As the night wore on, he circulated among the shifting, raucous groups, catching up with old buddies from the basketball team, flirting with old flings who hadnât taken his roaming attention too personally. Along toward eleven, someone set off fireworksâthe puffy, sparky kind you could buy off road-side stands, nothing too awe-inspiring. Billy had kept a weather eye out from a distance, anticipating bone-headed injuries, but fortunately didnât need to bring his lifeguard training to bear.
Hadnât lost track of Harrington the whole time, which is how they never crossed paths, buffered by the repelling forcefield of Billyâs hyperawareness.
That was what people hadnât realized, but Billy knew with certainty: that he and Harrington were magnetsâno tight jeans necessary, Ed, because the magnets were in them. Were them. They were. And unless Billy kept his magnet flipped at all times, his negative pole aimed at Harringtonâs, heâd go flying. Crash right into him and never want to part.
Or, inevitably: crash and keep crashing until heâd broken himself to pieces, because Billy was a realist, and Harrington wasâHarrington.
So he knew it was a bad idea to go investigate when he heard the commotion by Carverâs big shiny Jeep CherokeeâHarringtonâs last registered location. Knew he shouldnât, that whatever conflict was unfolding, Harrington would be fine. Butâhis feet were already moving, heedless of the alarm blaring Danger, Will Robinson.
âJasonâSTOP,â Chrissy cried, her pint-size form hidden by the huddle of figures all standing loose and yet tenseâlike the halting shift of winds before a storm. âYouâre both drunk and stupidâjust quit it!â
Carver did not quit it, based on his reply; the guy being likewise a pip-squeak, Billy couldnât see him in the crowd, either. âWhat, Iâm sâposed to take what he said lying down?â
âYeah,â answered Harrington, obviously wasted off his face. âOr take it bending overâup to you.â
Knowing fighting words when he heard them, Billy launched himself through the inner ring of bodies in time to see Carver land a punch. Chrissy darted in front of her slavering boyfriend, arms out to stymie further blows, but Carver was too far gone to notice and clobbered her on the backswing. Chrissy went down like a bag of bricks, knelt whimpering on the ground.
âGet him out of here!â Billy shouted, grabbing Harrington by the scruff of his douchey poloâmore to keep him upright than anything, since heâd made no move to defend himself. Carverâs croniesâChance and Andyâhauled him away, and Billy reached a toward Chrissy.
âHere,â he said. âCan you stand?â
Chrissy let him lever her to her feet again as she wiped at tear-streaked cheeks with her wrist.
âChrissy,â slurred Harrington. His glassy doe eyes were round and contrite. ââM so sorry, Chrissyâdidnât mean toââ
âShut the fuck up, Harrington,â Billy snapped, pulling them both toward the bonfire, where waited a herd of coolers, and hopefully some ice. Harrington stumbled and then righted himself, head ducked like a naughty puppy, Billyâs fist unrelenting in his collar.
He sat Chrissy on a closed cooler and, in a moment of inspiration, kicked Harringtonâs feet out from under him. The oof as he collapsed onto his ass was damn satisfying. Crouching, Billy dug up a nice icy chunk and held it out to Chrissy.
âWrap this in your bandana and hold it where he clipped you.â
âThanks,â she said, sniffling, and did as she was told, lifting the improvised cold-pack to her cheekbone.
âAnd you,â he said, yanking his other patient upright. Harrington groaned, palm pressed to his left eye. âYou gonna hurl?â
ââŠNo,â Harrington grumbled, after a quick, assessing pause.
âThen here,â Billy announced, shoving a clump of ice under his nose. âAnd you can freeze your eyeball solid for all I care, but if youâve got any braincells left, Iâd wrap it in your shirt or something.â
Several mincing silhouettes came rushing up to his triage station.
âOh, my godâChrissy!â said oneâhe thought her name was Judy. Maybe Trudy. âWe heard what happened! Are you okay?â
âJason just ralphed in some bushesâso gross,â cried anotherâJen. Or Jess?
âHeâs gonna feel so bad when he realizes whatââ
âI think I want to go home,â Chrissy said, her hushed words somehow cutting through the noise.
There was an awkward pause while the assembled girls waited for someone else to volunteer to leave the party early. Such friends.
Billy closed the cooler lid.
âIâll drive you,â he said, low. After all, Eddie would never forgive him if he let someone three sheets to the wind sail his precious Chrissy anywhere. âYou, too,â he added, sharp, poking Harringtonâs shoulder.
âFine.â
âFine,â Billy parroted, and corralled him upward ungently. Chrissy stood, aimed a quavering smile his way, and followed him to the car.
~~~
Somehow, they heaved Harrington into the cramped backseat of the Camaro. Chrissy sat prim in passenger and secured her seatbelt, because of course she did. In deference to her finer sensibilities, he stuck one of Maxâs pop mixes in the tape deck and turned the volume low.
Peeling onto the dirt road, he snuck a glance at Harrington slumped against the sliver of window.
âYou blow chunks in my car, Harrington, and I will kill you.â
âFuck off.â Mumbled and mutinous.
âNice,â Billy replied, faux-enthused, and Chrissy giggled quietly, her elbow propped on the door, still holding the icepack to her face. He glanced over just as another tear oozed down her cheek, and she swiped at it with a huff.
âDonât know why I canât stopâcrying,â she said, abashed. âDoesnât hurt that bad.â
âItâs just âcause he caught ya near the eye,â Billy explained. âItâs gonna smart awhile.â
She smiled, tremulous and grateful. âYou know all this fromâyour job? Eddie saidââ She stopped, flushing, as though unsure whether her frequent chats with one Edward Munson were safe to acknowledge out loud.
âYep,â Billy confirmed, skating past her awkwardness. âCertified life-saver.â
âYouâre⊠good at it,â she offered.
âWhat even happened?â he asked, flicking his gaze at Harrington in the rearview.
She sighed, annoyed. âIt was mostly Jason being aâbig jerk,â she proclaimed, puffing out her chest like sheâd just used some strong language there and was damn proud of it. Billy bit his lip, stifling an amused grin. âHe kept bringing up college when he knows thatââ Not at all subtly, she threw a look at the drunk in the back and continued in a whisper. âWhen he knows that not everyone isâgoing and might not wanna talk about it.â
Billy raised his brows, seeing where this was going. âSo Harrington said something dickish right back, and thenâŠ?â
Chrissy nodded. âJason was reallyâneedling him, though. About Nancy, too. You know how he gets.â
Billy did. Which begged the question:
âWhy are you with him, again?â he asked. âNo offense. You just seem likeâŠâ They coasted to a stop at a red light, and he looked her up and down. Chrissy stared back at him, curious to hear what she seemed. âThe opposite of a big jerk.â
Her lips quirked, shyly pleased. She was justâso fucking cute. And sweet. And kind. No wonder Ed adored her. Billy swallowed hard, mentally bid farewell to his and Eddieâsâthing.
âNot for nothing, butâŠâ He blinked away a sudden burn, stared at the red light. It turned green, and they were moving. âI know a certain guy whoâs also the opposite of a jerk. Who really likes you.â
He didnât look at herâdidnât want her to feel too⊠put on the spot, or whatever.
âJustâputting it out there,â he said. âAs someone whoâs figuring out that who I was in high school isnât actually⊠who I am.â
When she spoke, her voice was wobbly. âIâm leaving. End of August.â
âI know.â He chewed on that, then shrugged. âAnd youâll have to figure out who you are out there, too.â Let out a cynical snort, wry smile. âLike I did when they dragged me here.â
Chrissy was quiet the rest of the way to Harringtonâs, but it wasnât a cold quietâmore contemplative. He pulled up to the curb outside the McMansion that had hosted many a rager over the years and climbed out to lever his seat forward.
Harrington was still slumped sideways, looking worse for wear, but cobbled together enough coordination so that Billy wasnât dragging dead weight up the walkway.
The place was locked, naturally.
âHarrington,â he said, propping him against the door. âWhere are your keys?â
When all that produced was a breathy laugh, Billy made the fatal error of glaring at himâand their eyes met. Harringtonâs were half closed, his head tilted back so the moon licked the line of his throat. There was a glint in his eyesâa sharpness that Billy hadnât expected, that stole his air.
âBack pocket,â Harrington said, and thenâmade no move to get them.
Billy wasnât built to resist so blatant an invitation, however ill-advised. Slowly, he slid the hand gripping Harringtonâs side down, down, around. Over the speedbump of his belt, until he brushed the lip of a pocket. He hadnât blinked, lost in the slivers of dark irisâwasnât breathing, either, though his heart was pounding like a drum.
It was like he saidâthey were magnets. Billy stepped close, slipped his fingers in. Cupped the curve of his ass, cinched them flush, and there it wasâHarringtonâs dick hard as a post, right there, right where Billy was throbbing, separated by layers of denim and cotton that did little to mute the heat.
âKnew it,â said Harrington, one corner of his mouth lifted in a mocking smirk. His lips parted again, and the shape was mean.
Billy jerked the keys free, fumbled with the deadboltâgot it right on the first try, somehowâand turned the knob. The door swung inward, and Harrington was dumped onto his pampered derriĂšre for the second time that evening.
âYou know fuck all,â Billy said. âDrink water before you crawl to bed, asshole.â
Chrissy was watching him, jaw agape, as he stomped back to the carâwas still goggling at him when they pulled onto the main road.
âYou live off of Mulberry, right?â he asked, faking calm.
âDid youâwhat justâ?â
âHarringtonâs one of those big jerks we talked about.â It came out tight, words squished past a clogged windpipe. âAnd Iâve been trying to swear off those, you know? Cold turkey. Zero tolerance. Just say no.â
âAre you⊠okay?â asked the girl who was gonna take his one non-jerk away from him.
âMm-hmm.â Blinked away more burn. Breathed in, easy-easy, out easy-easy.
He was being dumb. Eddie wasnât gonnaâgo anywhere, just because he had a girlfriend. Heâd still be Eddie. Goofy, open-hearted Eddie. And maybe Chrissy didnât even want to date him, maybe they were being presumptuous, maybeâ
Oh, who was he kidding. If Chrissy saw even half of what Billy saw in Eddie, of course sheâd want to date himâhow could she not?
Because Eddie was justâhe was a good person. Like, at his core. And he deserved a good person. Someone who made him happy. Like Chrissy.
By the time they drove past the laundromat, heâd talked himself around to looking on the bright side of things. Eddie was his friend. Would still be his friend. And so he drove, Chrissy indicating through murmurs and pointed fingers where to turn, until he parked in the driveway of a stately colonial.
They sat in silence. Chrissy unbuckled her seat belt and hesitated only a moment before she touched Billyâs arm. Her fingers were soft and warm.
âYou sure youâre okay?â The way she asked itâlike she really wanted to know the answer, and cared, threatened to undo all that hard work to regain his composure. He gulped the painful lump as it bloomed again. âYou seem upset.â
Billy huffed a laugh, shook his head. âItâs nothing, justâŠâ He closed his eyes, like that would help, and when she ran her hand down his forearm, soothing, the words came pouring out. âI think I just forgot. How nice it is when someoneâs⊠nice to you? When someone⊠makes you feel good. And how itâs kinda key. To have that.â
Chrissy squeezed his arm, and he opened his eyes to find she had been infected by the waterworks.
âI think Iâd forgotten, too,â she whispered.
Billy sucked his lips between his teeth and raised his brows, a silent who woulda thunk it?
She let out a giggle, faint and stuttery, tugged on his wrist, and before he knew it, sheâd swindled him into a hug.
And look at that. It was nice. It made him feel good. So he mustered the will to speak once more. Seal his fate. Nail in the coffin. Other melodramatic metaphors.
âCome see him play on Tuesday?"
She withdrew enough to scan his face, and nodded.
~~~
He waited till the front door closed behind her, then backed out of the driveway, wove his way through the circuitous neighborhood.
Pulled into the parking lot of the laundromat.
Then crossed his arms over the steering wheel and had a nice, good cry.
