“Violet, we’re supposed to be studying for our English paper.” Harper tried not to laugh as her fingertips gently brushed the the temple that Violet had just kissed.

Violet sat back on her heels pouted, her bottom lip jutting out. “why must we learn English if we already speak it?” 

“Well, there’s English as a language, like when we talk and stuff, but there’s also English as a literature, like books and poetry, and…stuff.”

“What kind of stuff?” Violet persisted, her head cocked to the side in her adorably curious way.

Grinning, Harper began flipping through the textbook in front of her, ignoring all the pages marked with “ON THE TEST” and “WORDS TO KNOW”, to the beginning of the poetry section. “Ars Poetica” by Archibald MacLeish

Now Violet’s nose was scrunched up in confusion. “What does it mean?” She asked.

“That’s it Vi, it doesn’t have to mean anything. It just has to exist, make us question life as we know it, and whether things really are as they seem.”
