When Nao returns to Tokyo to reconnect with her Japanese heritage, she books a yearlong stay at the Himawari sharehouse. There she meets Hyejung and Tina, two other girls who came to Japan to freely forge their own paths. The trio live together, share meals, and even attend the same Japanese-language school, which results in them becoming fast friends. But will they be able to hold one another up as life tests them with new loves, old heartbreaks, and the everyday challenges of being fish out of water?

昨日と一昨日、私は「ひまわりハウス」を読んでとても愛読した！東京でシェアハウスに住んでいる3人の女性と2人の兄弟の話で、シェアハウスの皆が友達になって一緒に色々な困難を乗り越えようとするグラフィックノベルである。3人の女性は日本で生まれてアメリカで育ったなおと、韓国から来て美術学校に入学したがっているヘジュン、シンガポールから来てレストランでアルバイトをしているティナである。「ひまわりハウス」はこの3人の1年間の話に集中している。

「ひまわりハウス」の一番おもしろいところは、多言語の本だということである。つまり、英語だけではなく、日本語でも韓国語でも書かれた本である。日本語と韓国語の文はほとんど全部英訳されているが、例えばヘジュンが韓国語で話し出すときなどは、とても正直で感動的な一瞬になって私は大好きである。その上、もしかして日本語や韓国語を勉強している人が「ひまわりハウス」を読むことに決めたら、おそらくその言語を英訳と並んで読むことを楽しめるだろう。

私が一番好きな人物はなおである。なぜなら、なおは、日本からアメリカに移住した母とアメリカ人の父の子どもで、私も両親が外国からアメリカに移住したのである。なおの赤ん坊のときに、その家族がアメリカに行って日本にほとんど戻らなかったので、なおはぜひいつか日本に住んでみたいと思っている。

また、なおは頭がいい人で、ひまわりハウスの兄弟のまさきの英語の勉強を手伝ってくれる。（なんか「の」がありすぎた文みたいじゃない…）何ヶ月一緒に勉強している間に、まさきは前より英語が上手になって、どんな言語でも皆としゃべることが好きになる。

（そしてなおとまさくんには、何かロマンチックなことが起こるのかもしれない…！）

結局、ひまわりハウスの住民は皆、複雑な一年を過ごす。この本が勇気と正直を持って5人の若い人の話を伝える。「多言語」ということはどういう意味があるか？「外人」とは誰であるか？人の居場所は生まれた場所か育った場所であるか？「ひまわりハウス」はこんな難しい質問をしたり答えたりしようとするが、私の意見ではすばらしい成功を収める。

Nao lived in Japan as a kid, but, most of her life she’s lived in the United States. But, she feels as though part of her is missing. She moves into Himawari House, a place for young students from all over the world and meets Hyejung and Tina (from Korea and Singapore). All three become friends (despite the language barrier), and, get closer as they go to class, work, and try to figure out what they want from their future.

The language stuff was the most interesting part, since there’s Japanese, Korean, English, etc. And, the art really really got across the language confusion as well. All three characters are also nicely unique, but, they all fit together on the page really well too. It was a great look at Japan, and at those who change the country they live in.

Reluctant Reader Wednesday: Himawari House by Harmony Becker

Nao, Hyejung, and Tina all came to Japan for different reasons, but what unites them the most is that they are outsiders who are trying to fit in. All of them are going to school and improving their Japanese language skills, and all of them are living in the Himawari House in Tokyo.

Even though they come from different backgrounds, they all share the experience of being foreign exchange students, they all share their love of great food, and they all form strong bonds of friendship with each other. Those bonds are going to be very important, because each of them will rely on that support system to help them deal with their own challenges over the year they’ll live together.
