The Odisha Government, under the visionary leadership of Honourable Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi organized the Vijay Utsav, a grand celebration took place at Kalinga Stadium on August 21, 2024. This prestigious event honoured the Indian Hockey team for their remarkable achievement of securing the Bronze Medal at the recent Olympic Games.

The Indian hockey team, captained by Harmanpreet Singh and featuring Odia star Amit Rohidas, clinched the Bronze Medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a decisive victory over Spain. The Vijay Utsav kicked off with an energetic parade from Biju Patnaik Airport to Kalinga Stadium, culminating in a grand celebration of the nation’s sporting heroes with thousands of people and hundreds of folk artists joining the Roadshow. The road show was a true testament to the state’s unwavering support for hockey and its deep connection with the sport as stated by honourableSports Minister Suryabanshi Suraj.

Honourable Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi opened all doors to encourage the Hockey Team by announcing ₹15 lakh for each player, ₹10 lakh for the support staff, ₹50 lakh for PRSreejesh, and ₹4 crore for Odisha’s star, Amit Rohidas.

Odisha Government is now focusing on enhancing grassroots-level infrastructure to promote sports across the state. This strategic move aligns with Chief Minister of Odisha’s vision to build a robust sports ecosystem and elevate the overall sports culture in the state. Building upon commitment to hockey, Chief Minister Majhi has announced a further extension of Odisha’s sponsorship of Indian hockey until 2036 which aligns with the state’s ambitious ‘Vision Odisha: 2036,’ which celebrates Odisha’s centenary.

Sports Minister Suryabanshi Suraj added, “This grand celebration not only honours our athletes’ remarkable achievements but also underscores Odisha Government’s pivotal role in advancing sports both nationally and internationally. We reaffirm our focus on nurturing talent and building a robust sports infrastructure for the future from the grassroots level. Govt. will leave no stone unturned in creating robust infrastructure setup at the ground level to develop more players Olympic ready which is in line with Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision.”

India’s men’s hockey team clinched a second successive bronze medal at the Olympics for the first time in 52 years after a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Spain, giving veteran goalkeeper P R Sreejesh a fitting farewell in Paris .

It was tense last few minutes for the Indians as Spain forced two penalty-corners in the last minute but the defence stood tall and soaked in the pressure.

Having won a bronze in the Tokyo Games after a hiatus of 41 years, the eight-time Olympic champions lived up to expectations despite not having a perfect build-up to the tournament.

The last time India won back-to-back Olympic medals was in 1968 (bronze) and 1972 editions (bronze).

The bronze medal was also a desperate wait for the Indian contingent, which has endured six fourth-place finishes so far, apart the heartbreaking disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat.

Spain went ahead with skipper Marc Miralles converting a penalty stroke in the 18th minute.

India’s captain Harmanpreet Singh then stole the limelight, scoring in the 30th and 33rd minute from penalty-corners.

Shrugging off their heart-wrenching 2-3 defeat to Germany in the semi-finals, India came out all guns blazing and dominated possession in the first quarter.
