145.) My Inner Harbor sweater. Started working on it on April 1, 2019 on Facebook Live video. Proposed as an April Fool’s joke in which I announced I was taking a knitting business trip and making an appearance for fans in my hometown Baltimore. The following day, I announced the truth: that I was taking a trip to Italy, which happened. Did the finishing touches of it sitting in that location in front of a reporter. #sambarsky #sambarskysweaters #sambarskyknitter #knit #knitting #knitter #art #artist #sweater #intarsia #handknit #baltimore #innerharbor #maryland #baltimoremaryland #baltimoremd #harbor #harborplace #nationalaquarium #worldtradecenter #worldtradecenterbaltimore #ship #sailabration #tallships (at Inner Harbor) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChGb8PRtRwC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Lost luxury
The Gallery at Harborplace: 1980s - Jan. 2022
The Light Street Pavilion at Harborplace, Baltimore. Closed restaurants upon closed restaurants. The 2nd floor was roped off from the public, and H&M, which took up a lot of space on both levels of the mall, was closing. It seemed like only Hooters was sticking around 🙈
"Visions describe what best should be, could be - if and when mankind has the will to make them real." - Jim Rouse, mall developer & urban planner
Pictured: The Gallery at Harborplace, Baltimore MD. Harborplace was a downtown Baltimore revival project undertaken by The Rouse Company consisting originally of a pair of two-story shopping malls - the Pratt Street Pavilion and the Light Street Pavilion, which opened in 1980. The Gallery at Harborplace, a third mall that included 4 levels of luxury shopping, was added to the complex later that same decade. Harborplace was the last project that Jim Rouse personally oversaw, and it held a special meaning to him as a Maryland native. After losing relevance for years, the Gallery at Harborplace closed in January 2022. The two pavilion malls at Harborplace remain open, but they too are in a sad state.
Part of my series about the downfall of famous developers and the malls they built.

Nothing's forever.
The Gallery at Harborplace: 1980s - Jan. 2022
Located at Baltimore's busiest intersection, at the gateway to the famed Waterfront Promenade, The Gallery provides retailers a prime location, which is within easy walking distance of Baltimore’s Convention Center, the National Aquarium and Marine Mammal Pavilion, the Orioles Park at Camden Yards and many other museums and cultural destinations. Millions of people visit The Gallery annually, drawn by three stories of quality shopping and dining options. The tenant lineup includes Spaces, Pandora, Forever 21, Foot Locker, and Bath & Body Works. The building offers spectacular Inner Harbor views, 24-hour security and maintenance and five levels of underground parking.
The Gallery at Harborplace has permanently closed at the start of 2022. The above description remains on the mall owner's website to this day, in stark contrast to the actual descent into irrelevance & obsolescence that the mall suffered prior to its closure.
The Gallery at Harborplace, as seen on its owner's website vs in person on December 26th 2021. The nearly-empty mall closed just days later.
