Reading the Wikipedia article on Taiwanese Mandarin, and it includes a list of words that are pronounced different between putonghua Mandarin in Beijing and guoyu Mandarin in Taiwan. And I'm reading along, figuring out that the first pronunciation is the putonghua and the second is the guoyu - until I get to the word for trash, where I recognise the second pronunciation laji, not the first, lese. So I copied the characters and threw them in Google translate for Simplified Chinese, to get it to show the romanisation, and yes, it shows the first one, lese.
I learnt the word for trash from Mr. Housework, when You Zhangjing and Wang Sulong had a long funny discussion about sorting the recycling, including which kind of garbage they themselves should be sorted with.
You Zhangjing accidentally taught me the Taiwanese pronunciation for trash :S
