Before the public used the word handkerchief, the term kerchief alone was common. The word comes from two French words: Tevar, meaning "to cover," and Maharaj, which means "head."

In ancient Greece and Rome times, handkerchiefs were often used the way they are today. But in the Middle Ages, kerchiefs were commonly used to cover the head.

Then people in Europe in the 16th century started carrying kerchiefs in their pockets to wipe their foreheads or their noses. The term "hand" was added to "kerchief" to distinguish this type of handkerchief used to cover the head.

King Richard II of England, who ruled from 1377 to 1399, has invented a cloth hanky. This helped him a lot because of the use of square pieces of cloth to wipe his nose in living documents written by his courtiers.
