1. Shaking hands is a greeting, not a competition. Your goal is to avoid making the other person uncomfortable.

2. There are two main ways that people are made uncomfortable- pain and clammy hands.

—2b. To avoid causing pain, remember you're not demonstrating your grip strength. Pretend your hand is giving their hand a quick hello hug- not lingering, and not caressing. Think about a ripe banana or a plastic cup- if you'd crush one of those, you're squeezing too hard.

—2c. To avoid the clammy feeling, work on your anxiety. (HAH!) But really, try to keep your hands warm and dry- for example, keep a paper napkin in your pocket, and keep your hands in your pocket until it's time to shake hands. Dress warmly if it's cold. Remember that no one is as harsh about you as you are (if they are, set some boundaries and/or remove them from your life).

3. Practice before you need to shake hands. Get comfortable with it. Ask your parental figures, your teachers, your friends, your roommates, your siblings. Ask for feedback, ask for advice.
