Why Girls Go Astray
Andy Lowry founder of Why Girls Go Astray home goods, has been making and selling art for over 10 years. In 2012 she quit teaching at university to work on her business full-time. Why Girls Go Astray offers a variety of decorative trays and plates for the home with beautiful and sometimes strange vintage motifs, which are sure to serve as delightful conversation pieces.
All WGGA products are made by hand, utilizing two distinct decoupage techniques, and carefully updating and replicating 18th- and 19th-century processes. “Decoupage, the first process employs a method of affixing a hand-cut illustration onto the tray and layering coats of resin on top, giving it depth and durability. For the second—under-glass decoupage, a variation of the potichomania process—the glass acts as both a foundation and protective finish, saving the step of varnishing. The relative thinness of the tray, just over an eighth of an inch thick, belies the complexity of this process. These under-glass trays are comprised of glass, multiple layers of paper, glue, paint, acrylic spray, and a high-quality felt pad on the bottom,” says Andy.
That is quite a fascinating process and the quality is rather impeccable. Why Girls Go Astray is generously donating one of its awesome, large under-glass decoupage trays (retail price $100) to the Nevada City Craft Fair raffle this year. Will you be the lucky winner? If not, no worries! She will be fully stocked at her booth with many designs to choose from. December 11th, 2016! 10AM-6PM
