Burr- Hamilton Duel - Weehawken, New Jersey
July 11, 1804 was the date of the infamous duel between then Vice President, Aaron Burr, and former Treasury Secretary, Alexander Hamilton. The duel was the final showdown in the ongoing rivalry between these two men. In the early morning, both men left Manhattan in two separate boats and rowed across the Hudson River to a spot that was called the Heights of Weehawken in New Jersey. At the time, it was a popular dueling spot located just below the cliffs of the Palisades. Hamilton shot first and hit a tree directly behind Burr. On his turn, Burr shot directly hitting Hamilton and mortally wounding him. Hamilton died the next day.
