Storm Season in Central Texas Is Harder on Roofs Than Most Homeowners Realize
A Central Texas home with an asphalt shingle roof on a clear day, a good reminder that storm damage is not always visible from the street.
If you own a home in College Station, Bryan, Navasota, or anywhere else in the Brazos Valley, you already know that spring and fall storm seasons mean business. What a lot of homeowners do not realize is that the damage those storms leave behind on a roof is almost never visible from the ground.
Hail is the big one. Central Texas sits in one of the most active hail corridors in the country, and every season brings multiple events with stones large enough to do real damage to asphalt shingles. The way it works is this: hail does not usually crack a shingle outright. It knocks away the granule coating, the gritty protective layer on the surface, which exposes the underlying mat to UV breakdown. Under a College Station summer, that exposed mat deteriorates fast.
You are more likely to notice granule buildup in your gutters after a storm than any obvious damage on the roof itself. That is your first signal worth paying attention to.
The timing problem is real. Insurance claims in Texas generally need to be filed within one to two years of the storm event. But many roofs do not start leaking until a year or more after the damage occurred. By the time a water stain shows up on your ceiling, you may be approaching your claim window without knowing it.
What actually helps: getting a professional inspection with a written report shortly after any significant hail or wind event. Not a visual scan from the driveway. A proper inspection that covers the attic, flashing, gutters, and all roof penetrations, with dated photographs. That documentation protects you whether you end up filing a claim or not.
