What made Season 1 so exciting and so amazing was because there was a real tension between the protagonists and antagonists -- it was a push and pull, and no side clearly overpower the other. It made good story because not only we see the protagonists struggle and triumph, but we also see the antagonists struggle and triumph as well. It was well-balanced, and every plotline added, every twist made sense. 

Avria’s whole narrative is hinged on “let’s make Etheria great again,” which is honestly such a weak narrative. Where is her build-up? Where did the tension come from? What is her point in the grand scheme of things? Why is she the way she is? Literally none of these questions are addressed adequately. Instead what we’re watching is an antagonist that does not really enhance the narrative of the protagonists.

Apparently, while Enca so unceremoniously terminated two beloved characters, it has decided to bring Hagorn back to the fore. I am puzzled (and frankly intrigued) by the Hathorian king’s return. Rather than dismissing this as another blunder in the plot, I try first to find some reconciliation. In my contemplation, I infer a plausible explanation from Ether’s very own curse. According to Emre, a bathaluman’s curse may not be undone by another bathaluman. What if there is something more to this adage? What if a curse cast by a bathaluman’s old self cannot be undone by his or her future self? The logic is that when Hagorn dies, then Pirena dies as well. My theory is that Ether never really waived the curse; she merely reversed it. By virtue of Pirena’s resurrection, Hagorn is resurrected as well. Maybe it’s a modus tollens thing? If true, that would be exciting. However, I guess the truth may be simpler. In Ether’s wording, Pirena will die if she turns against her father. That is what Pirena exactly did. It said nowhere the curse and if and only if Hagorn dies, Pirena dies as well. The act of turning against the Hathorian king is sufficient enough for the enactment of the curse. Enca has had a lot of inconsistencies and screw-ups so, IDK, really. 

Personally, I think John Arcilla had a graceful exit and his journey in playing Hagorn was satisfying and well-tied up. I don’t think that this move is wise considering the conclusiveness of Hagorn’s arc. Bringing a iconic villain back just to become another villain’s distraction is a disappointing device to make use of. We don’t expect someone as vile as Hagorn to reform, but unless he has something fresh to bring to the table, his time in Encantadia should be considered done. Encantadia’s best move is to explore the repercussions of bringing the King of Hathoria back. Obviously, a power-struggle for the throne of Hathoria due to Hagorn’s return and the inevitable relevation of Luna’s Hathorian birthright being Deshna is expected. However, it would be a delight to see Avria losing control of Hagorn. Hagorn has innate distrust and Avria’s underestimation of the Hathorian king might make him this chapter’s loose cannon.

However, what piques my interest the most would be Hagorn’s reaction to Avria’s slaughter of his granddaughter. Although Hagorn and Mira did not see eye to eye, Encantadia was able show how Hagorn had better affection for Mira over Pirena. Before Lila Sari and Deshna, the king eyed his granddaughter to carry the mantle of Hathoria and that has to account for something. What could placate fans equally heartbroken and frustrated by Mira and Lira’s death is the idea of Hagorn avenging his granddaughter’s demise. We should not get our hopes up however. For all we know, Hagorn will simply gloat at the diwatas’ misery.
