RIP Gerald Harper (15.2.1929 - 2.7.2025)
"I don't much like touring, but doing plays of Romeo and Juliet's quality is different, it is pure joy. And I don't mind being one of the older generation in the cast. [...] All my life, my one passion has been the theatre."
"[Adam Adamant Lives!] was enormous fun and I have enormous affection for it. It was like weekly rep with a better dressing room. We made the first 13 in 13 weeks, including rehearsal time."
GERALD HARPER (1929-Died July 2nd 2025,at 96). English actor, best known for his work on television, having played the title roles in Adam Adamant Lives! (1966–67) and Hadleigh (1969–76). He then returned to his main love, the theatre. His classical work includes playing on Broadway with the Old Vic company, playing Iago at the Bristol Old Vic and Benedick at the Chichester Festival Theatre. Other plays in London included Crucifer of Blood at the Haymarket Theatre, House Guest, A Personal Affair, Suddenly at Home and Baggage. He directed many plays, amongst them a production of Blithe Spirit in Hebrew at the Israeli National Theatre.Gerald Harper - Wikipedia

Barry Dennen as Max Frank from the tv show, Hadleigh. Episode, “The Diplomat”.
Screencaps by me, The Amethyst Vampiress.
James Maxwell (Max as we knew him) died on August 18... He was... a founding artistic director of the Royal Exchange. ... he has been devoted to the evolution of this company all his working life. He was fundamental to its success. He was wise, kind and generous in his help, advice, and artistic direction.
As an artist he was multi-talented and practised each of his skills with distinction... As a director, he was particularly skilful at comedy, loving to make people laugh, but it was as an actor that he would want to be remembered, and that is not difficult to do. He was the best Prospero I have ever seen, his Osborne in Journey’s End... was infinitely humane and moving.
He died serenely and was not afraid of death. He should not be mourned, he should be thanked and celebrated. [his friend and co-artistic director of the Royal Exchange, Braham Murray, in JM’s Stage obit, Sep. 1995]
