Revisited - Secret Garden.
I'm a sucker for growth and characters changing. So watching Seungnyang gain a realization of just how precarious the Emperor's position is and what the axes of power really are within the palace is satisfying. Especially as it allows for her connection to Tahwan to deepen.
Like he is pathetic and helpless. Powerless really. Which makes her re-assess how he betrayed her in the past.
Her recognizing she is the only person who can comfort him, and actually choosing to do so. Not in a patronizing way or resentfully. But she's just there. Because he needs it. And unlike Some People, he accepts her being there and leans on her support.
And again... unlike some people... though it pains him to have her see how weak and powerless he is, he recognizes her strength and ability and asks her to help him. He likes the idea of who he can be with her supporting him. He wants to be that person.
Ok after a nice Wang Yu bash sesh, we go to Tahwan who, yes is pathetic and weak and spineless...but he also has a trajectory, an arc for growth. On top of he actively works to make Seungnyang's life better (well as much as it can be given the reality of their world)
Like you know, getting her the cushiest job he can and getting her nice digs.
Also... gods he's such a dork - I did mention that but it always bears repeating bc...
Blissfully smelling her handkerchief because it smells like her. (nerd)
Asking her and being interested in what she wants (not that he's gonna give her to Wang Yu bc man has his limits but he does actually care)
And then she drunkenly passes out so he puts her in his bed... and he's tempted... but he's no sleeze. Nope, he'll just give her a peck on her hand.... and then be all giddy about it... because he is a simp and a dork (affectionate).
Maybe the show is benefiting from Chang Wook's palpable charisma, and the chemistry between him and Ha Ji Won (I remember interviews of them talking about how well they got along on set together)... and maybe I'm just biased because Junsu sings their theme song. It's probably all of that but man I enjoy them.
Decided to rewatch Empress Ki and I'm up to episode 16 and ... I'd forgotten how much of an energy suck this man is.
Wang Yu is the Korean king, trapped being subject to the Yuan emperors. We are supposed to root for him (the Korean nationalism/ propaganda is strong here) and his love affair with Seung Nyang is supposed to be tragic. It's supposed to hurt that they cannot be together (bc.. yaknow... history) and yet he has absolutely zero charisma. This is the only expression he makes. He's always completely flat. And Serious. So Serious.
Like... the writing tries but he's just so damn unlikable.
Literally zero sparks between these two. The both just always look uncomfortable and pained.
And I don't root for them at all because... they aren't people to one another. They're symbols. She's the country he must protect, and he's the home she wants to return to (not as in he means home to her but as in he represents home). Even when they were in Korea there was no banter between them, she was always so rigid.
And when she dreams of him, she only ever calls him 'Sire'. I... just can't root for symbols. I care about people. And these two aren't people to one another. They don't work together, they don't conect, in fact he actively hamstrings her from helping him every chance he gets.
Unironically glad I have these two to explain how Wang Yu feels because this is all he gives when he sees Seungnyang and the Emporor Tahwan comforting each other.
Yes king, give us vaguely constipated.

Finished Healer and it is just as fantastic as I remembered. Keeps going all the way up to the end. Literally the very end. Was refreshing to realize I didn't always find Park Min Young insufferable. I wonder what happened between then and now but it is what it is.
I'll maybe to a longer write up when I have time. But its enough that it definitely holds up over a decade later.
For now I think I'm gonna rewatch Empress Ki
