"If you like Quinn Hughes, thank Bobby Orr. If you like Cale Makar, or Roman Josi, or Erik Karlsson, thank Bobby Orr. Before him, defencemen didn’t really do offence; when he played, teams didn’t know what to make of him."

The Lafleur Report
The game of hockey has lost one of its greatest and most celebrated players, as Montreal Canadiens icon and Hockey Hall of Famer Guy Lafleur
When I woke up to this news, my first instinct was to text my dad. I’ve had a lot of these moments lately, and then that stinging reminder kicks in. But my brother then texted me, unprompted: “I know you would have messaged dad when a hockey great passes away. I’m here for ya.”
I met Lafleur once and he was an absolute asshole to me (one of my favourite stories cause I kinda deserved it), but it doesn’t affect the memories of how excited my dad would get whenever Lafleur was on the ice and would activate his super-speed. Man, that guy could skate. I remember we were all at my grandparents place the night he played his first post-retirement game (with the Rangers) against the Habs, scoring two goals that night. And then his last game with the Nordiques. Many memories.
We lost my dad five months ago today.
Anyways, fuck cancer.
