túrin and gurthang probably
…and on his left Túrin Turambar, son of Húrin, returning from the Doom of Men at the ending of the world; and the black sword of Túrin shall deal unto Morgoth his death and final end; and so shall the Children of Húrin and all fallen Men be avenged.
I absolutely admire the genius move by JRRT to leave people to wonder if the cursed blade Gurthang really had consciousness or it was just the unlucky Turin pushed to his limits, on the verge of suicide, hallucinating the voice of his sword, telling him that it wants his blood to make up for Beleg’s and Brandir’s, iniquitously spilled by him.
There’s this idea in my head about the Dagor Dagorath, that a reforged Gurthang is what leads a revived and reluctant Turin into battle: a vengeful bloodthirsty blade that got shattered once by feisting over his owner’s iniquous blood, and now wants to take revenge on Melkor, the most evil one, for the curse he put on Hurin and his children.
Beleg was collecting the most cursed beings in Arda like they were pokemon he was never making it😭

“Hail, Niníel.”
Late submission for @tolkienwomensweek, Day 1, ‘Companionship’. Had this idea for a while and thought it was cute. She should’ve had the opportunity to at least meet Gurthang!
gurthang, turin and gwindor trio kinda growing on me
Thinking again of Turin...
I'm contemplaiting his friendship with Sador: A man in the service of Hurin who had an accident with his axe and hewed his right foot. Turin called him Labadal, which means 'Hopafoot'.Bbut he didn't do so with ill intent and Sador did not mind. Turin pitied him but he also loved him. He even gifted him the knife he received as a birthday presemt from Hurin and he stood by that act even when Morwen expressed that Sador did not deserve the gift. After that incident Turin is content to notice that Sador is treated more kindly.
Then we meet Brandir whose foot is also hurt. Brandir is not a man of war, and that goes past the trouble he has with his foot. He IS brave in his own way, but he has a kinder temperament. He's a healer with good instincts and with advice that would have changed the tragic trajectory of the story if they had been followed. He does not even seem to hate Turin despite the fact that he loses everything because of him.
Well, as Turin becomes fell when his doom is upon him, his behaviour shifts. He calls Brandir "clubfoot" in his verbal attacks several times and even "limping evil-", trying to diminish him. It's a surprising contrast to the compassionate character we meet early in the story (glimpses of whom we get still when Turin and Brandir meet) and it's important to me that this sort of behaviour is presented as irrational and as a product of the character's descent.
It's also interesting that when Turin rises after killing Glaurung, he cannot walk properly and he has to stand by using Gurthang as a crutch. And it is this very object, this weapon (which Turin wielded against a man of truth who was no threat to him and "had no weapon but his crutch") that tells Turin: "Yea, I will drink thy blood, that I may forget the blood of Beleg my master, and the blood of Brandir slain unjustly. I will slay thee swiftly.'
