a bit of a rant; maybe i’m a hater?
I spent about 20 minutes trying to open a piece that I was excited to read. It was (it said) about gundruk. Amitav Ghosh said it was beautiful. So did a number of other writers and journalists I respect.
I’m beginning to wonder what they saw in this piece, that I didn’t.
I love gundruk. I love writing about diaspora. I love even-decent writing about food and culture and people’s sense of home. But this piece, like so many I seem to find lately by Nepali writers who have been abroad for the last 8 or so years, was...boring. It was over-written. It was void of flow. It was too long. The woman who wrote it was a journalist in the past (which makes me laugh, because she now works in policy, and that makes me think, continually, of the journalist-dais who cautioned me back in 2005 and 2006 -- stick to journalism, please, if you can! don’t go join a development org, like all the others seem to!), and I was hoping this piece would have some of the keen observations and humanity that her newspaper pieces used to. Instead, it was full of cliches. all i could think, as I read it, was -- really? you never considered that before moving? you never thought about what is lost in migration, or in diaspora?
maybe it’s just that my orientation and perspective are so different, especially now. Maybe I’ve outgrown these kinds of pieces. I don’t know. I just also don’t know what all the people who shared it, saw in the piece. I wonder if there’s a way to ask.
