Ok, I saw a cool theory that says the reason Caine was able to come back is because computers don't actually delete data, they just remove the direct links and mark it to be copied over by new data. So the Void could have been acting as the recycle bin and Caine was able to manually restore himself.
So.
What if when he got there and has his tragic existential crisis, the camera then pans over to reveal Gumigoo and Abel playing cards not far off? And they start heckling him.
